I have a lot of series and would like to list them in order (obviously) but I can't seem to figure out how. Is it a matter of the order I add them or is there another way?

Put the number in parenthesis after the series name, e.g. Chronicles of Amber (7).

You can sort your catalog in several different ways: date read, alphabetically by title, date entered, alphabetically by author, alphabetically by first tag, etc. But, as far as I know, there is no way to sort your catalog by series order. What I would recommend you do is tag you series. To illustrate, taking jjwilson's example, I would make the first tag for that book be chronicles of amber - 7. Then, when you sort by tag, you can bring those books together in order.
There is also a series sub-option on the "statistics" page. To get to the statistics page, look at the second-level tabs under Home or Profile. Those will list the series you have titles in and list your books in series order.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the Series information on the work page, not in your catalog. You can list that series info in your catalog if you edit your view (the A-E at the top of the catalog) but you can't currently sort on it, so putting that info in tags or in the comments field is the way to go.

The other way I know of to do what I think you're wanting to do is add the series info to your book titles and just sort by title.
This has the negative impact of requiring you to recombine almost every single book you alter the title of. And for purists, it's not actually the book title.
I found it worthwhile though as it keeps every Star Trek book I have in the order I want. I've also got a lot of other books from various series but 250+ Trek books is the biggest influence in wanting the series sort available.
If you want to see exactly what I mean have a look at my catalog.

Okay, maybe I've just gone stupid, but for some reason I have one series that will not stay in order. It goes 1, 12, 11, 10, 2...ect. And of course, they are the only books I care about! Can someone go into my library and fix it, tag it correctly, something? I'm Zedd, the books are under Goodkind. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's being sorted in alphanumeric order instead of numeric order. Try making the numbers have the same number of digits, i.e. 01, 02, 03...09, 10, 11, etc.
Oh, and no one else can change the data in your library (unless you give them your password and they log in as you).

Zedd, are you sure that the order you quote is the one it's actually using? Not 1, 10, 11, 12, 2? Because I can't see any conceivable reason why it would sort 1, 12, 11, 10, 2. But 1, 10, 11, 12, 2 is actually "correct" -- it's just not the kind of correct you want. :)
To get it to sort numerically, rather than alphanumerically, you have to make sure all numerical tags are the same length -- 01, 02 ... 10, 11, 12.

Hugs and Kisses and Cookies all around!!!!! All I had to do was add a stupid 0. It's the only series that I have that goes over 9, so I couldn't figure out why it was only doing it there.
BTW, Thanks to your suggestions on tagging, all my other series and stand alones by the same author are now in their proper places.
I really do appreciate the help.

I take that back, I have another series that goes higher, but I hadn't noticed it. Added the 0's and now its in order.
Big thanks, you guys are mind savers.

Is there a way to sort by entry date, then author, without the apparent long-form date being the sort order? That is to say, I entered a large batch of books on the same day. I can sort by entry date, but the subsort by Title chunks out in multiple a-z runs, presumably by mini-session (hours?).
Alternatively, is there a way to show only the books entered on a certain date or session? Rather than by entry-minute (LOL)?
Thanks!

I am a fairly new member and I have been trying to figure out how to organize my books by author last name... then possibly with in some broad based theme or tag... It has been a learning by doing process... I wonder if I am missing a tool? Or information area on how to use the software?... something like A to Z in organizing your books... I get that you should be able to organize by Alphabet last first by Author but I have not be able to get it to work... I am sure it is something I am doing wrong... pointers would be helpful...

>13 ckNikka: At the top of your catalog in the headings, click on "Author" once to get the authors sorted in alphabetical order, twice for reverse alphabetical order. Many of the headings along the top will let you sort by that heading if you click on them.

I appreicate very much your and all of those that took the time to help me. I tried the simple advice to click on "Author" once and that got the authors sorted in alphabetical order. I copied the rest of your suggestions (from other area) and will experiment with them. Is there some area on the site that inculdes this information that I have over looked? I have not explored the "Wiki" suggestion which may be the answer to my question. Again my appreciation to all! Cliff (Nikka) my Japanese nick name...

With regard to sorting by series order, is there any quick and dirty way of copying the information in the series field into the tags field or comments field (or other field that is sortable-by)?
It seems a little inefficient to manually copy the data from the non-sortable Series field to a sortable other field...

It is seldom useful to reopen topics that are 16 years old. LT has changed so much in that time that the old advice can no longer be relied on, and better features may have been developed.
In this case, any automatic feature would have to work for all books, including those in multiple series. Considering how many series have different orders for publication and story line, this just can't work.

Folks complain when new people don't look for old threads and complain when they find them. They can't win. Shame. Hope you found what you're looking for KimPossible - welcome to LT.

A recent topic is good to look at and might have useful information. One from 2008 is probably outdated. Even if some of the advice in it still works, there will have been a lot of changes in the meantime.
I also tried to give a helpful answer, if not what the poster was looking for.

Thanks very much! ^_^
For the avoidance of doubt, I did look for more recent threads, but this one seemed to be the most relevant topic to my question, so I figured I'd tack onto the end. It's not a mission-critical situation though, so any input is appreciated!
I had a man-look though, so maybe I missed a more recent and even more relevant topic...
