Do books about Central Asia qualify for this group? If so, I'd recommend 'Taxi to Tashkent - Two Years with the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan'. Middle aged guy joins the Peace Corps, goes to Uzbekistan, and teaches about HIV/AIDS prevention to fundamentalist Muslims.
