Republican former US Senator from North Carolina Jesse Helms died July 4 at the age of 86. He was the author of When Free Men Shall Stand, Here's Where I Stand: A Memoir, The Ramparts We Watched, Empire for Liberty: A Sovereign America and Her Moral Mission, and 100 Proof Pure Old Jess: Jesse Helms' Quotations.

Famed editor Clay Felker died July 1 at the age of 82. He was the author of The Power Game and Casey Stengel's Secret.

Former head of the Cleveland Museum Sherman E. Lee died July 9 at the age of 90. An expert on Asian art, some of his books include A History of Far Eastern Art, Chinese Landscape Painting, Japanese Decorative Style, Ancient Sculpture from India and The Genius of Japanese Design.

Scholar of Persia Ann Lambton died July 19 at age 96. She was the author of Three Persian Dialects, Persian Grammar, Persian Vocabulary, Landlord and Peasant in Persia: A Study of Land Tenure and Land Revenue Administration and The Persian Reform 1962-66.
