Basic DIY book on home renovation?

This isn't really a Pinoy-only request, but since the renovations will take place in the Philippines, I'll throw my question out here:

Can anyone recommend a good, basic book on things to know before undertaking renovations? I feel helplessly at the mercy of contractors who seem to speak a language I've never heard before.
