e-book publishing

well it seems that ebook publishing has found a niche.
the majority of works seem to be released in unprotected formats.
Baen books for example sell unprotected ebook versions of all their Paperbacks similtaneously with paperback issue. and don't have seem to have any problems with piracy. people hapilly pay rather than bumming a copy of a friend. Indeed they raised their prices because their Readers forums told them they were worth more. Baen are also produces more and more hardback editions. Something that they attribute to their e-book sales, It appears that reader who find they like the ebook version want something less ephmeral. and while they might have been satisfied if they had bought a paperback originally they are not robust enough for people who decide they want a keeper.

More and more authors are also releaseing their abandoned back catalogue in these formats. and those silly little ebooks publisher that sprang up are sticking to sticking around and occasionally flourishing. Ellora's Cave originally set up to e-publish the unknown author's xrated romances now has a stable of other authors and real live staff. not only that but ebooks are becomeing recognised routes to more mainstream books more than one Ellora's Cave author has since been published by say Berkley.

How are the major publishers approaching this? Well it seems mixed basicly they seem to be worried about undercutting their hard copy sales. Thus you can see protected ebook editions of popular authors released simultaeously with the hardback. and at the same price level. Some how I dont think their sales of these are too high after all most DRM schemes sharply limit the utility of the ebook. It seems they think Baen books are mistaken.
