first book to read?

Mike and I are pulling for Myst - The book of Atrus

Interesting... when I added this book to this list and clicked it it showed several other Myst books (3 Myst, some for Riven and some for Exile). I don't want to do 10 in a row, but if the first is good we could try others every now and then.

First I will learn to read and then I will learn to spell. One difficult task at a time!

Jim and Mike,
It looks like you've won 2-1-1.

It looks like Atrus is the first in a set of 3 (Atrus, Ti'ana, and D'ni).
Amazon sells the paperback SET for $13.60, and it appears Atrus by itself is mostly in hardcover ($$)

NEW LINE o THOUGHT:
The first thing we discussed was the lord of the rings trilogy. We should probably do that eventually, but NOT all 3 in a row.
AND, if we read those we may as well read the Hobbit and (the book i think is the best from the Tolkien Family) The Children of Hurin. I read this some time ago and wanted to re-read but never got around to it (steven king's 7 book series the dark tower occupied my time for a year or so).
ANYWAYZ: I propose reading Hobbit, Myst1:Atrus, Children of Hurin, Name of the Wind, LOTR1:FOTR, some steven king book-maybe the stand, LOTR2:TTT, Other Side of the River, LOTR3:ROTK, Myst2:Tiana, some steven king book, Myst3:Dni... and so on if we last that long!

Thoughts?

And yes, Matt... I mean read them in that order; I do not mean read all of them before the first meeting

Sorry, Jim but when I read a series if I don't read them in order I might as well not read them because I will forget important parts for the next book, In fact I forget when I read them back to back.

And looking at my library I should have said, dammit Jim I'm an engineer not a memory man.

Sounds reasonable to me. I like to read consecutively all but Matt had some concerns about burn out... perhaps he will reconsider.

How about, since everyone has seen the LOTR movies and / or read the books at some point in their lives, we start with Children of Hurin, then Hobbit then LOTR1-3... that's the order in the tolkien world so it would be interesting to read them in that order.

Alternatively, we could finish up the series Mike is currently on (Narnia). We would start at the 4th chronological book Prince Caspian. FYI, the chron order is MN, LW&W, H&HB, PC, VotDT, SC, LB. Has anyone read those yet? I have, but the books are so intertwined and complex that I couldnt tell u which kids are in caspian, which are in dawn treader, which are in silver chair, etc... i remember only LW&W and tLB for sure.

If I had to choose I would go for the tolkien books first; but narnia would be a close 2nd.

I could go for the Tolkein series, then Limoney Snicket

I talked to everyone and no one seems to object to going with the tolkein books first.
We start with Children of Hurin, then Hobbit, then LOTR1-3 (follow the chronological order).

I suggest trying to find the book over this weekend and reading the first chapter. I can scan mine and email i guess if people can't find it at the store or library (email me if you need that jim.oskins@gmail.com). I remember seeing it at the library, target and meijers recently so it hopefully will be no problem.

Mike orders through Scholastic for a big discount. We should make use of that in the future.

ok, so Children of Hurin...there is Contents, Preface and an Introduction which cover the first 23 pages. Chapter 2 ends on page 60, and chapter 3 goes just 5 more pages. I'm going to suggest we start with that for next Monday, the 8th, through chapter 3. Let's try and get a good feel for # of pages we want to read each week...I guess just be ready to discuss that and maybe some character/plot development. If I'm not mistaken, Jim will miss our first get-together. If we want to just lengthen the reading and meet a week later, that's fine too.
