Back to work on Monday

Hi Antoinetta, a great idea for a group - there must be hundreds of thousands of us out there who do our best reading on the train. And what better test of whether a book is truly absorbing than to see if it can take your mind off the commuting experience?

I'm heading back to work on Monday after two marvellous weeks away from the office. I'll be the one nearing the end of Postwar by Tony Judt which is excellent - lives up to its ecstatic reviews. (although at 850-odd pages it's a little bulky given the lack of space on most rush-hour trains!).

Hello crasher66,

Welcome to this most popular of groups! I've been away on holiday & was delighted to come across your message on my return. Thanks for your interest in the group! I'm picking up where I left off with A Good School, a rather slim volume, so it won't take me too long to finish. I'm hoping to read all Yates novels, he's very underrated from what I can gather. I'll have a browse through your library for inspiration & keep you posted.

Happy Commuting!

I'm afraid my library's still pretty small (though I'm updating it gradually). Yours, on the other hand is amazing - especially all the classical literature.

Ashamed to day I don't know anything at all about Yates yet but I'll look out for him.

Hello,
I had a very pleasant journey this morning, got a seat & tucked into The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, an Italian classic that I've wanted to read for a long time. What are you reading now? If you are at all interested in classical literature please read The Greeks by Kitto it is the best general book on Classical Greek culture ever written & a wonderful read.It would be nice if we could tempt others to join the group,I'm going to browse through London librarything members & send a few invites.

I will definitely try the Kitto at some point - thanks. It sounds like just the kind of overview to introduce me to a subject I don't know much about. I've read the Iliad and Odyssey and that's about it.

Right now I'm struggling, and I mean struggling, through Wings of the Dove. It's a point of principle with me that I never give up on a book just because it's difficult but it's reminding me how irritating James is. It's as though he deliberately didn't want anyone to get through it.

Are you tube or train? Hour on the train each morning for me.

Both,15 minutes on the train then the tube, shouldn't complain as it's great how many books you get through.I haven't readWings of the Dovebut I really enjoyed the film starring Helena Bonham-Carter!Wonderful scenery & atmosphere & it all ends in tears as far as I can remember.Don't give up,think how good you'll feel if you get through it.
