Editor for Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Robert Giroux died September 5 at the age of 94. In addition to serving as editor for many major writers of the twentieth century, he wrote The Book Known as Q: A consideration of Shakespeare's Sonnets and A Deed of Death: The Story Behind the Unsolved Murder of Hollywood Director William Desmond Taylor.

Thubten Jigme Norbu eldest brother of the Dalai Lama, died September 5 at the age of 86 by western reckoning and 87 by Tibetan reckoning. He was one of the first Tibetan leaders to seek asylum and assistance from the west after the Chinese takeover of his country. He wrote his autobiography with the assistance of Heinrich Harrer and it was called Tibet is my Country, The Autobiography of Thubten Jigme Norbu, brother of the Dalai Lama, as told to Heinrich Harrer.

Novelist Gregory Mcdonald died September 7 at the age of 71. He was the author of the Fletch novels including Confess, Fletch, Fletch, too, Fletch Lives and Fletch Won. Some of his other books were Running Scared, The Brave, Souvenirs of a Blown World and Safekeeping.

Historian of Romanesque art, George Zarnecki, CBE, nee´ Jerzy, died September 8 at the age of 92. He was the author of Romanesque Art, The Monastic Achievement, Art of the Medieval World, English Romanesque Sculpture 1066-1140, Later English Romanesque Sculpture 1140-1210, Studies in Romanesque Sculpture and Further Studies in Romanesque Sculpture.

Crime novelist James Crumley died September 17 at the age of 68. He was the author of The Wrong Case, The Dancing Bear, The Final Country, The Last Good Kiss, The Mexican Tree Duck, The Right Madness, Bordersnakes, The Two Count Cadence and The Muddy Fork and Other Things.

Jazz trumpeter, author and music critic Richard M. Sudhalter died September 19 at the age of 69. He was the author of Lost Chords: White Musicians and Their Contribution to Jazz, 1915-1945, Bix: Man and Legend and Stardust Melody: The Life and Music of Hoagy Carmichael.

Historian William Woodruff died September 23 at the age of 92. He was the author of Billy Boy later renamed as the Road to Nab End: A Lancashire Childhood, Vessel of Sadness and Paradise Galore.

Poet and critic Hayden Carruth died September 29 at the age of 87. Archaeologist Avraham Biran who excavated many Biblical sites, died on September 16 at the age of 98. He was the author of Biblical Dan, concerning the excavation of the city of Tel Dan.
