The Metropolitan Opera's high definition projections have come to Honolulu. I haven't seen any fanfare, and the opera people I know have been pretty much in the dark. One of our group, however, went to the gala opening and said that there were about a dozen and a half people there. I intend to go tomorrow despite having other things that must get done to do. I'm hoping Honolulu can support this.

The schedule with the apparent erroneous start time of 2 p.m. is on the HPR web site.

Tickets are available on line. Start about halfway down the page.

Anyway the first full opera is Salome at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the Dole Cannery Regal Theaters for about $20.

I haven't been to one of these movie theater Met broadcasts. A friend here in S.F. did go last year, though, and she said it was an absolutely wonderful experience. I think it was a near full-house here, rather than a dozen or two in the audience.

I saw the movie Audition yesterday. It is a high definition documentary of the 2007 young artists' competition at the Met.

I love rightful triumph, and these young singers were triumphant. One triumph is bittersweet, and all of the triumphs are well-deserved. There is plenty of music and plenty of pathos befitting a movie about opera.

The movie plays twice in Canada in June, and I recommend it to people who are in Canada then.

I was at the Dole Cannery Theaters today and saw that there will be some Met encore presentations. I thought the previews named three, but the concierge desk could find only two:

The Barber of Seville July 29 7:00 p.m. $15
The Magic Flute August 5 7:00 p.m. $15

The web site lists only those two but implies that some theaters in the U.S. may have more.

I have a difficult conflict with the scheduling of The Magic Flute, and I really want to see it.
