It seems whenever I read reviews on Amazon or any other books site, a standard dismissal of many of the New Wave SF books of the 70's is "This book reads like something someone who took LSD wrote."

Apart from what seems like a "culture wars" characterization of the fiction of that period, how important is the psychedelic surrealism aspect of the New Wave SF from that period? And, does it truly date the work?
