It has become clear to me that although I read a lot I am not experiencing books from around the world. So my personal challenge is that in the next year I will read at least one book a month from a country not the UK or the US (I am from the UK). I am going to go through my shelves and see what I have but does anyone have any good suggestions?

The Bone People by Kri Hulme. (New Zealand)
The Harafish by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt)
Candide by Voltaire (France)

Great idea for a personal challenge, LibraryNook! As for ideas on what to read ...
- the monthly discussion thread is a great resource as noted in #3.
- a number of us have personal threads where we track our progress (mine is here).
- there are older threads in this group, some dormant now, that focused on specific parts of the world. I've found them very helpful.
- I also do tag searches in LT (lots of people tag their books by country). And if you like particular types of books like mysteries or memoirs or books by women authors, you can search on multiple tags.
I look forward to reading about your "travels"!

Thanks, I look forward to reading about everyone else's travels as well and getting some inspiration!

Besides the Reading Globally group (http://www.librarything.com/groups/readinggloballyficti) entioned above, there are also quite a few LT groups dedicated to particular regions, e.g.:-
South American Fiction http://www.librarything.com/groups/southamericanfictio (includes a link to a directory of translated work and several other lists)
Fans of Russian authors http://www.librarything.com/groups/loversofrussianauth
Asian Fiction & Non-Fiction http://www.librarything.com/groups/asianfictionnonfict
or even:-
Travel and Exploration literature http://www.librarything.com/groups/travelandexploratio
In Translation http://www.librarything.com/groups/intranslation
From time to time The Guardian encourages discussion on a particular country - see http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/books/world_literature_tour/ for example.

create your own visited country map
Thought I should get started on my travels, not been very adventurous yet this year but that should change now! I haven't done one of these map things before so I hope it works!
10MissDotty
OK to restart my travels I am in Chile with Isabel Allende and The House of Spirits.

The House of the Spirits was the first book I read this year. At times I couldn't put it down, but the last quarter of the book or so dragged on and on and I couldn't wait for it to be over. Hope you enjoy it, and good luck with your challenge!
12MissDotty
Thanks, I have found it hard to get into I have to admit but I seem to have got the flow now!
13MissDotty
Well after my last post I lost the flow again but then regained it last night and finished the last three quarters of the book last night and this morning! Haven't a clue what I am going to read next, off to look at the shelves!

Wow haven't updated for ages! I am currently in Kenya reading The Camel Bookmobile by Marsha Hamilton
