I've just read two of the few works on the subject: Scorpion Down and All Hands down. A former USMC groundpounder, I find subs a novel and fascinating subject (but I always thought that they shoulda' carried some dirt to dig foxholes in -- stole that inspiration from Bill Mauldin).
This Scorpion matter is very intriguing, the sense of the books being that a Russkie sub, or ASW chopper, dispatched a fatal torpedo. USN records seem altogether contrary. I spoke with a good 'ol chum, a sub-nuke officer during those same times when I was in WestPac, who has seen some of the pictures and classfied reports. He confesses to nothing contravening the party line.
Any insights? Wild ideas? other books?
That other Finn, Jaaskelainen, ought to respond to my message from last winter. Hokkanen
