DL's 999 Challenge

Allrighty! This looks too good to pass up so I guess I'm in. I just have to remember not to start until January! I've been having fun combing through my tbr books looking for good fits for the catagories and these are what I've come up with so far:

Vampires

1. Braced2Bite by Serena Robar
2. The Darkangel by Meredith Ann Pierce
3. Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian
4. Love At First Bite Anthology
5. Colin's Conquest by Lisa Rene Smith
6. Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
7. Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward
8. Guilty Pleasures by Anita Blake
9. Prince of Twilight by Maggie Shayne

Werewolves

1. The Cursed One by Rhonda Thompson
2. Prince of Shadows by Susan Krinard
3. Wolf Moon by John R. Holt
4. Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
5. To Tame a Wolf by Susan Krinard
6. Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs
7. The Shadowmen: Touch of a Dark Wolf by Jennifer St. Giles
8. Broken by Kelley Armstrong
9. One Eye Open by Karen Whiddon

Okay, think I've got the bold fixed and I've added demons to the appropriate catagory (I think)

Some of these books I'm working on the descriptions and what I think they'll be about, but in some cases I may be wrong. Won't know until I read them!

11/21/2008 - I've decided to split my picks up into different posts. It makes it easier to edit! See below for other catagories...

Nov 21, 2008, 6:47 pm

Thanks! I was going to un-bold last night but my son was pulling my arm wanting to play mad libs so I had to give in. It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for all the touchstones I would have had to fix and I just didn't have the time.

Ooof! I've finally finished filling in my books using the original template (I was too stubborn to change stuff around.) I've got some crossovers, some re-reads and a few I'll need to buy and/or take out from the library but I was primarily able to propagate my lists from my tbr pile. That makes me happy!

Now if I could only get the touchstones to start working again!!

10saraslibrary
Dec 3, 2008, 4:19 pm

That's an impressive list, Jenson! :) And I know what you mean about the touchstones. Mine just suddenly disappeared from my list too.

11Jenson_AKA_DL
Dec 4, 2008, 4:46 pm

I fixed my complaint on post 6 and forgot to take out my gripe. However, since I've gotten the majority of them to work correctly I'm not going back again!

It's still not working on post 7.

12saraslibrary
Dec 4, 2008, 4:59 pm

Is that why touchstones stop working--if you edit an entry too many times? I can't recall how many times I've edited.

13Jenson_AKA_DL
Dec 4, 2008, 8:27 pm

I have no idea really, just my speculation.

14Jenson_AKA_DL
Jan 6, 2009, 1:58 pm

So, I think I'm doing well. I've finished two books off my list so far: Vampire Academy and The Darkest Night and really enjoyed both books.

Up next for this challenge: PsyCop.

15cflorente
Jan 6, 2009, 4:05 pm

Fun and FULL list! I'll have to check out some of your books :)

Also - I've noticed that sometimes the touchstones work - then suddenly they don't. I think it's a LT thing. :)

What I DO know is...I need more bookshelves. Haha.

16saraslibrary

I've read two tof the vampire academy books, too. :) I need to buy thr others... I hope there are others!

Jan 30, 2009, 4:23 pm

There is a third, Shadow Kiss, and a fourth that I believe just came out or is supposed to come out soon.

20The_Book_Queen
Edited: Jan 31, 2009, 11:53 pm

The fourth one is still in writing/editing/publishing phase *not sure which* and will not be out until later this year *hopefully, her website says August 2009*. The title is Blood Promise. (no touchstones yet). There is also a fifth one down, title TBA and date 2010. I can't wait for it-- I want to know what's going to happen to Rose and Dimitri! :)

21cflorente
Feb 3, 2009, 5:10 pm

#19 and 20: I just found that out, too! I can't believe I have to wait until August for the next book...... all I know is that the 3rd book (i just read it yesterday) was chalk full of plot development AND MAJOR cliff hanger!!!

22Jenson_AKA_DL
Feb 4, 2009, 1:39 pm

I'm still waiting on Shadow Kiss from the library. Now I'm tempted to hold off on reading it until closer to August *sigh* Cliffhangers make me bonkers!

23Jenson_AKA_DL
Feb 18, 2009, 11:46 am

Well, Shadow Kiss arrived and is next on my reading list. At least I've been forwarned about the cliffhanger :-)

I'm not sure how people feel about changes to the reading lists after the first of the year but I've switched one book Castle of the Wolf for Lords of Were. Part of the reason is that after looking at the book description for Castle of the Wolf, I think it may have nothing to do with werewolves at all (I'm not entirely sure). On the other hand Lords of Were is in at the library, definately involves werewolves and is one I have to read soon anyway.

24Kat32
Feb 18, 2009, 12:04 pm

I wouldn't worry to much about making changes there is always something new that I want to add to my lists or something better then what I'm reading so I just change it.

25cflorente
Feb 18, 2009, 6:31 pm

LOL - i make changes ALL THE TIME. I basically tweak it to fit how I feel or what i've actually done. haha. ;) I think the list guides you along, but it's not a contract :)

omg cliffhanger....!!!!! it's totally out of control. I wish didn't find the series until August! Hehehehe.

Doesn't Dimitri sound...hawt?

26Jenson_AKA_DL
Feb 23, 2009, 3:48 pm

>25 cflorente: Thanks :-)

Dimitri does sound pretty yummy, but I also kind of like Andre. I have a thing for the highly damaged type of soul.

27Jenson_AKA_DL
Feb 24, 2009, 2:33 pm

So, I started Lords of the Were on Saturday but gave it up about halfway.

I know I have other were books at home and will list one when I find a good one.

28saraslibrary
Feb 24, 2009, 4:11 pm

Sorry to hear Lords of the Were wasn't any good. But life is short, so it's better to find a good book than wade through something you hate. Best of luck. :)

29cflorente
Mar 13, 2009, 2:29 pm

That's sad - i'll remember not to pick that up ;)

#26: Yes, Adrian is also intriguing :) I he sounds like a bad boy on the surface, but a good boy inside. :) I totally agree.

(did you mean andre or adrian? i think andre was lissa's brohter...who died, right? adrian is the guy they met at the lodge who has spirit power like lissa.)

30Jenson_AKA_DL
Mar 16, 2009, 9:25 am

Adrian - geez, you'd think I'd remember that since it is also my son's name!

I think I'll be starting Love at First Bite next since it is my in car emergency book, I forgot to bring another book with me and I have to go to the hospital for tests today.

31cflorente
Mar 17, 2009, 1:24 pm

How is it so far? I like how you have an emergency book :) I should do that (I actually have books i've already read as emergency books....but having a new book makes sense!)

32Jenson_AKA_DL
Mar 18, 2009, 10:44 am

I'm presently re-reading the first short story which is a Kenyon DH story. I read it when I first got the book (over a year ago) so I didn't remember much of it.

I started the emergency book thing when I would have to pick my son up from practice. I always wanted to make sure I had something to do :-) Now he has his own license but I still like the idea of it. My husband thinks I'm crazy to keep books in the car.

33amysnortts
Mar 18, 2009, 11:16 pm

I always have an emergency book in my purse or my car as well! I don't think you're crazy (but I may not be the best judge!).

34cflorente
Mar 19, 2009, 7:06 pm

My fiance gets mad when I suggest we eat dinner and read our respective books.... Sounds like an ideal dinner to me ;)

35Jenson_AKA_DL
Mar 30, 2009, 10:34 am

My husband and I had a lunch date last week and he got annoyed that I pulled my book out to read while he was in the bathroom! *rolls eyes* It was less boring than stareing blankly into space while no one was around.

I'm steadily working stuff off my list. Right now I'm reading another werewolf pick, Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs.

36cflorente

I love the mercy thompson books! have fun!

37Jenson_AKA_DL

The only problem is I'm not doing so good cutting back on my tbr pile!

38cflorente
May 1, 2009, 1:49 pm

Yay! Any good ones so far?

I think I'm at....48 books?

39Jenson_AKA_DL
May 1, 2009, 1:59 pm

You're doing so much better than me! My problem is I get distracted and read lots of books that aren't even on my challenge.

My faves of what I've read on this challenge so far are probably the PsyCop and Vampire Academy books. They are way different from each other even though both series deal with paranormal stuff! Mostly I've liked everything I've read here. The only disappointment I had was the manga, Monochrome Factor.

40cflorente
May 1, 2009, 4:56 pm

I loved the Campie Academy! I can't wait for hte ext book - what a crazy cliff hanger!!

Haha - i FIND a way to put the books that I read on my challenge ;)

41viciouslittlething
Jun 12, 2009, 6:28 am

I have so many books that are trying their hardest to tempt me and they don't 'fit' into any category and it's frustrating. I have only read 9 off-subject books, but I am struggling on the challenge now. And especially since the Sims 3, I haven't done that much reading. I am starting to read and play at the same time, it's easy when you're reading things like the Vampire Academy, but not so great when you are reading Kat Richardson and the plots get me confused if I pick up and put down all the time.

42Jenson_AKA_DL
Jun 12, 2009, 9:57 am

I've actually read books that would fit on the challenge, but I feel guilty making too many substitutions. Not sure why. I'd have my wizard catagory finished if I listed all the library books with wizards I've read so far this year.

I also just spent two weeks reading a book that doesn't really fit here at all. That's the longest it has taken me to read a book in a long time.

43Jenson_AKA_DL
Jun 23, 2009, 11:50 am

I feel like I'm falling behind on all my challenges. I blame Harry Dresden! (LOL)

I did manage to knock another off my ghost list last night and read Mad, Mad Monday. It was pretty cute and very short.

44Jenson_AKA_DL
Edited: Jul 2, 2009, 11:57 am

A little over halfway through the year and I've only knocked 33 books off my list which is less than half *sigh* I do plan on primarily concentrating on my "challenge" books from now until the end of the year although I know that I'm bound to stray a bit.

I am now reading one of my werewolf books, Wolf Moon by John Holt so I'm off to my half-year start.

Way back when I first created my lists I had gone crazy trying to find "werecat" themed books, hence the reason the list got peppered with re-reads (none of which I've gotten to yet). One that came up in my Amazon search I wasn't really sure about was Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews which I just finished and is, in fact, a pretty good example of a werecat/urban fantasy themed book. I've switched one of my re-reads on the list to the sequel, Magic Burns, which I will be picking up from the library.

Just figured I'd toss that out there since the comment has been hanging around since the end of last year.

47viciouslittlething
Oct 20, 2009, 9:40 am

Ilona Andrews writes great books - I love Magic Bites, Magic Burns and Magic Strikes they are a fab series. I am struggling on the last few on my challange 8 to go and I keep getting distracted by other books, plus I'll be doing nanowrimo for November and it'll be unlikley that I read anything other than my own work.

Would Yasmine Galenorn's series with the D'Artigo sisters count as were cat? There is Delilah!

You will like Rachel Vincent's werecat series, they really do rock,

48Jenson_AKA_DL
Edited: Oct 20, 2009, 11:32 am

I have enjoyed the Ilona Andrews books so far and have Magic Strikes out from the library which will be taking the place of one of my two Feehan re-reads.

I haven't read the Yasmine Galenorn series, although it does sound familiar so I'm not sure if they would qualify for werecat or not. I'll have to check them out!

I'm also falling behind because I've been reading other books not on the challenge. Too much temptation at the library! However, at the moment I am reading one off my challenge, Armed and Magical by Lisa Shearin. It actually kind of reminds me of the Ilona Andrews books even though it isn't an "urban" fantasy. The heroines are a lot alike.

Thanks for the heads up on Rachel Vincent, it gives me something to look forward to :-)

Yesterday I finished Guilty Pleasures which wasn't quite what I expected from everything I had heard about it. I totally thought it would be romancier and it was more horror.

I also substituted one of my cross-over books for in the psychic catagory and read Beautiful Monster by Joely Skye which was interesting, if rather short.

I think if I just concentrate on what I have left I might be able to finish the challenge, but I'm not sure if I really have that much self control LOL!

50BookLizard
Nov 9, 2009, 10:18 am

49> Guilty Pleasures is more sexy than romancy, but then the series gets more romancier, then more kinky. LOL. Next year, I plan on re-reading the whole series . . . there's so much I've forgotten about it.

51Jenson_AKA_DL
Nov 9, 2009, 10:57 am

Does the Anita Blake series have a definate ending or is it ongoing?

52Kat32
Nov 9, 2009, 2:49 pm

There is something like 17 books in the Anita Blake series so far and still going. I've read about 13 of the 17 books so far and have enjoyed them all alot!

53Jenson_AKA_DL
Nov 18, 2009, 11:05 am

I've finished off my ghosts catagory by changing my last book to the one I finished last night. A bit of a cheat, but I see it as a small one. The book did involve ghosts and I did read it so it does fit, it just isn't one of the original ones. I've done this in other catagories as well.

I also finished Stray last night which was okay but didn't inspire me to go looking for Rogue to follow it up. Anyone know of any other interesting werecat type stories?

54BookLizard
Nov 20, 2009, 11:13 pm

Both the Sookie Stackhouse and Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series have werecats in the later books of the series.

Red-headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells has a demon in the shape of a talking cat. Not exactly a were, but very funny.

On the Prowl by Crystal Jordan is an anthology of related erotic novellas featuring werepanthers. Very racy.

55Jenson_AKA_DL
Edited: Nov 21, 2009, 3:50 pm

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually realized there is a book on my "books I want from the library" list called The Magical Christmas Cat which is an Christmasy anthology of werecat shifter stories. It is one that I've been thinking about taking out for a while and it is the season for it. I also tried to see of my library system had Red Headed stepchild but no luck.

56Jenson_AKA_DL
Edited: Jan 1, 2010, 6:51 pm

Looks like I won't be finishing up my challenge this year *sigh*, but I came pretty close. What I didn't get to:

The Prince of Twilight by Maggie Shayne
To Tame a Wolf by Susan Krinard
Eternity by Maggie Shayne
Witchcraft by Jayne Ann Krentz
Beneath the Surface by Evelyn Vaughn
Innocent Mage by Karen Miller
Isle of View by Piers Anthony
The Magician's Guild by Trudi Canavan
Repossessed by A.M. Jenkins
Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu
Dark Melody by Christine Feehan (which would have been a re-read anyway)
Temptation Calls by Caridad Penero
Missing Magic by Karen Whiddon
Dark Moon by Lindsay Longford
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh

I do still plan to try to read The Magical Christmas Cat from my werecat catagory if it ever comes in from the library and maybe get another couple done from this challenge if time allows.

57Jenson_AKA_DL

58saraslibrary

Don't worry about it. You came much closer than I did! :)

Funny, Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu was on my list, too, but I haven't gotten around to it (doubt I will by the end of December). Hope you finish The Magical Christmas Cat, though. That's such a perfect choice to end the year on.

59Jenson_AKA_DL

The Magical Christmas Cat is still out at the library so I'm not sure it will get here by the end of the month. On the other hand I did finish off my vampire catagory with Prince of Twilight by Maggie Shayne.
