Reading about Michigan

There doesn't seem to be a topic Michigan yet, so I'll mention a couple of Michigan-related books. I don't have many to recommend, even though I grew up there. I've heard good things about Dan Georgakas's Detroit: I Do Mind Dying, though I have yet to read it. I'm trying to remember the name of another book I read many years ago about the Fermi reactor near Monroe. It may have been We Almost Lost Detroit.

Middlesex by Jeffry Eugenides has some pretty powerful stuff on Detroit's history. I don't know anything else about Detroit besides what is in this book. Any comments on it's accuracy?

Anatomy of a Murder, by Robert Traver, is set in the U.P. The prologue is actually a bit of geographical and historical information about the region.

Ernest Hemingway's Nick Adams Stories are UP, too.

The books Feast of Love by Charles Baxter and South of Hell by P.J. Parrish are both based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Another very good book with a strong UP connection is Sundog by Jim Harrison ... and Eugenides, mentioned above, was from Detroit ... his Virgin Suicides was set in Grosse Pointe, Mich.

I've wanted to read Jim Harrison so I might toss in one of his for Michigan. Not positive but I think many of these are set in the U.P.

I think I will include True North for my Michigan fiction.

Steve Hamilton has written a bunch of mysteries, starting with A Cold Day in Paradise that all take place in the UP.
