Reading about Iowa

I would suggest these fiction books for Iowa:

A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley

Spirit Lake by McKinlay Kantor This is a fictionalized account of massacre that happened involving white settlers and the Indians.

Blue Jasmine by Kashmira Sheth is a children's book that is very well written.

Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella (was adapted for the movies as Field of Dreams)

An Ocean in Iowa by Peter Hedges takes place in a fictional suburb that sounds a lot like West Des Moines, with lots of suburban Des Moines-area landmarks popping up.

Also Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges is way out in the country of Iowa.

Also The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson which is him growing up in 1950s Des Moines and it gives a good idea of what it was like.

You might want to add Robert Coover to the authors from the state. He's done plenty of interesting stuff.
