I bought 123 books in 2008 while I only managed to read 77. In 2007, my read count was only 51.5 books. I wonder what my count for 2009 will be . . .

Stardust by Neil Gaiman - The book is completely forgettable. The movie tells a much better story.

What did you think of Ha'penny? Are you going to finish out the trilogy?

I am definitely going to finish the trilogy. I'm already about half done with Half a Crown. I find the books immensely disturbing because I see the possibility of a ideology espoused by a single group of people becoming the forced ideology of the masses.

Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton - reminded me of Emma and Pride and Prejudice, except with dragons. Very enjoyable read.

Did you try any of the projects in this book? What is the difficulty level? I used to do handwork, but haven't in a long time. I am thinking about giving it another try.

I haven't tried any of the projects yet, but I'm seriously eying the pattern called Azalea. I just love the way it looks.
It's really hard for me to judge difficulty level because I've been knitting for so long that not much seems difficult. The instructions are written as well as charted. There are projects knit in the round as well as square.
I've ordered the second book to see what it's like.

The Mammoth Book of Sorcerers' Tales edited by Mike Ashley - I couldn't finish the book. I read slightly more than half of it and I'm just bored with the rather mediocre stories. I couldn't even bring myself to read the stories by the authors I actually know and like.

How was the Carrie Fisher book?

It was chatty and rambly. It's based on a one woman show she does. I think I like her fiction better.

>21 seitherin: I actually felt the same way about her fiction. I read Postcards From the Edge a few years ago and hated it.

So are the books by Mankell a series? What do you think of them?

He has the Wallander series and stand alones. I like the Wallander series. I was not overly fond of the only stand alone I've read so far - Kennedy's Brain. It was a little too 'conspiracy theory' for my taste.

Hi seitherin! How were Shadowbridge and Lord Tophet? I have Shadowbridge on my bookshelf and am looking forward to reading it. What did you think? How was Lord Tophet in comparison?
35seitherin
Shadowbridge and Lord Tophet are one book that was broken in two. Why, I don't know except I suspect it has to do with charging more because there is no other reason I can see for taking one (reasonably) short novel and turning it into two volumes. If you don't have Lord Tophet don't read Shadowbridge. The second book begins immediately where the first leaves off and continues on with the story.
I actually really enjoyed Shadowbridge but the book may not be everyone's cup of tea. It flip flops between present and past, and stories about the mythos of Shadowbridge are sprinkled into the narrative. I wasn't as fond of Lord Tophet, but I think that happened because I didn't know the two books were actually one and I only had the first book to read when I went on vacation. I read several other books between Shadowbridge and Lord Tophet so I was disconnected from the story when I finally found a copy of Lord Tophet and read it.

Thanks for the review and heads up! This sounds like a book I'd enjoy. Lord Tophet is available in my local library so I'll borrow it when I start Shadowbridge.
