Hello, I'm new on the site and I'm french, so let me now if I do something wrong, and please excuse my english ^^
A LT member direct me here, so I hope you'll be able to help me!

I'm searching for a book (or several) in which story takes place in England, around 1920's (1925 exactly, but I'm not naive enough to believe I'll find it ^^" I know, it's not 1929, but maybe...?). The best would be that a part of the story takes place in winter, ideally a Christmas period, but once again, I don't hope so much...

In fact I need descriptions of everyday life during this period, descriptions of buildings, of clothing styles, of mechanics/engineering/technology level, of mentalities... And I said to myself 'hey, nothing's worth a good book to find that!' (Well, perhaps a good movie.) Oh, and I'm not really searching for post-war stories, just in case ^^ I just wanna see towns, and people's life ^^

Can you help me? Thanks ^o^

Bonjour, LilyRae. There is a series of six books by E.F. Benson which is a comedy of manners (comédie de manières) set in this period which describes the daily life of the gentry (la petite noblesse?) and townspeople in which clothing, attitudes, the life in the town and Christmas (in Mapp and Lucia in particular) all get touched on. I would suggest that you read Miss Mapp and Mapp and Lucia. The whole series is a lot of fun but as a lot of the humour is very English, some things might get lost in translation (perdu dans la traduction). Bonne chance!
