Here is the Books of Magic cover published in 1990-1991. I'm not saying anything else. Just showing the cover.

Aw, but he's riding a flying skateboard! And doesn't have a visible scar OR his mother's green eyes! Totally different!

I mean... I see no similarity to anything else in the world of young adult fantasy. Right?

I haven't looked too closely, but I don't see a scar on his forehead ;-)

looks interesting though, I'll go search it up and give it a read.

I have to say I like Tim a bit better. He's published in Vertigo, so he has better chances at adult situations. Plus, he comes with pretty pictures.

I've just placed an ILL request with my local library for this one. I simply must take a look at this! My request list is reaching an all time high since I joined LT.

Didn't Jane Yolen have a book about a boy going to wizard school way before Harry Potter came on the scene?

Neil Gaiman (the original author of the Books of Magic) has said that he doesn't think he was ripped off - that they were both following the same archetypes and some overlap was to be expected or something like that.

I'm pretty sure he's being diplomatic. The similarities are glaring.

Well, Gaiman writes a lot of "mythic cycles" stuff, so maybe he's more likely to believe someone could have the same idea without seeing his.

In all truth, I do prefer Tim. Just because I read him first. :)

I think he feels obliged to be diplomatic he wears his influences quite openly. and Rowlings are just as obvious It would be as pointless as Star wars calling Battle star Galactica derivative. Oh they did, and the only good that acheived was a nice paid holiday for Brian Alidiss.

How do you think he gets his hair to stay down in all that wind? Must be magic.
