I thought it was wierd how they pronounced Laurents name.

4bombardalicious2

That was funny, he was like, "I'm Laurent."

5Hermee
Jan 13, 2009, 6:35 pm

The fact that Robert pulled off the dazzling part with such finesse, especially in the second biology scene. Not that I doubted his acting skills coz I've been a fan since Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but he truly pulled me under his spell.

In an interview, he said he struggled with his contact lenses, taking 20 minutes to insert each lens every day he had to wear them, and both Kristen and Rob said they blurred their vision so they weren't always sure if they were looking in the right direction, but you couldn't tell that in this scene (or any other). He was "dazzling".

6Hermee
Edited: Jan 13, 2009, 6:37 pm

Laurent's a French name, which is why it's pronounced that way.

7MrsGrinch
Jan 13, 2009, 7:45 pm

Why did Kristen wear contact lenses?

8Hermee
Jan 13, 2009, 9:42 pm

Because she has green eyes in real life, but brown in the book.

9penguin711
Jan 13, 2009, 10:29 pm

Yeah, it suprised me that Laurent was black, (I'm not prejudice either), but in New Moon I don't know if I'm right, but didn't Bella think when she saw him something like "his pale skin, the most beautiful thing i've seen since Edward" or am I just insane?

10G.A.B.E
Jan 13, 2009, 10:31 pm

No, she said he had pale skin with an undertone of olive, if I'm correct. I don't think she ever says anyone's as good-looking as Edward .. except Renesmee.

11penguin711
Jan 13, 2009, 10:33 pm

yeah, no one's more beautiful than edward! But, I thought that she said like since edward and his family left, Laurent was the most beautiful thing she's seen.

12Hermee
Jan 14, 2009, 3:16 am

At the top of page 257 when Bella sees Laurent in the meadow it says:

His face was the most beautiful face I'd seen in what felt like an eternity.

You have a good memory, penguin.

Edited: Jan 15, 2009, 11:00 pm

You know, if you think about it, olives are purple and green, and wouldn't make for very nice skin colors on a human. Have seen that as a description for skin color in books before to describe someone black or Italian. Would that mean green olives are Italians and purple ones are people who are black? Hmm. Guess you could say aliens have olive skin then if you go with the little green men theory, couldn't you? :D

The one thing that disappointed me about the movie was when Laurent, James and Victoria leave the baseball game, James puts his arm around Victoria, signifying that they are more than just travelling companions. Part of the "fun" of New Moon is finding out that Victoria was connected in that way to James and is the reason behind her vendetta. I just think it spoils it that you find out in the first movie. What do you all think?

32Hermee
Jan 22, 2009, 12:12 am

That moment humanizes (or so to speak since he's a vampire) James, which doesn't fit for two reasons. First, it makes him seem less scary, which doesn't fit with what follows, especially when you consider the extent of his violence in the ballet studio and the fact that he videotapes it, something a sick serial killer would do. Second, he doesn't care about Victoria and that action makes it appear otherwise.

33jade605
Jan 22, 2009, 12:15 am

I do believe Victoria was James' mate I think....

34Hermee
Jan 22, 2009, 3:03 am

She was, but in Twilight Edward was reading his mind. Then in either Twilight, New Moon or Eclipse Edward mentioned that although James was Victoria's soul mate, he didn't feel any attachment to her so he may have felt the same way she did about Riley.

35G.A.B.E

48jade605

Bella's room was small I was thinking it should be more open but it was small, it's weird.

49Hermee
Jan 25, 2009, 11:14 am

Felt somewhat like that as well until I read the first twelve chapters of Midnight Sun, then watched Twilight again. Anna Kendrick's portrayal of Jessica in the movie seems perfectly matched with the way she is in Midnight Sun. Through Edward's mind-reading, you hear all the snide remarks she makes in her head.

She's not a good friend to Bella at all. In the movie when you first see Jessica in the cafeteria as she's telling Bella about each Cullen as they enter, she comes across as catty and jealous (though more so when you're reading that scene in Midnight Sun as it's even clearer then). Then there's the remark she makes to Bella about how she's the shiny new toy. She talks that way in her head all the time in Midnight Sun.

50MrsGrinch
Jan 25, 2009, 11:21 am

I thought Jessica's acting was good I just imagined her as like a super hot blonde.

51Hermee
Jan 25, 2009, 11:36 am

Can't remember how I envisioned her looks when I first read Twilight. Considering her snide remarks about Bella in Midnight Sun though, it did make me wonder if she was the most popular girl until Bella showed up, which would partly explain the extent of her jealousy. Seems much of it is in relation to Mike's attention towards Bella as well.

52G.A.B.E
Jan 25, 2009, 10:09 pm

Bella desribes Jess as extremely short with pale skin and wild curly dark hair - the actress that portrayed Jess didn't look like that at all. If I remember correctly, Anna Kendrick was taller than Bella or just the same height.

53jade605
Jan 30, 2009, 1:07 pm

Yeah I was thinking she should be blond too, but she wasn't.

54MrsGrinch

Jan 31, 2009, 12:03 pm

Yeah lol. I was surprised when they didn't mention anyhting about Jaspers power. Maybe they will in the next movies.

62G.A.B.E
Jan 31, 2009, 9:55 pm

It's easier in the books, b/c his gift is more subtler. Maybe when she's stressed in New Moon, her expression is all uptight and then the camera flicks to Jasper staring at Bella and then Bella's expression going calm and then she looks at Jasper quesitoningly and when Edward and Bella are alone, she can ask what happened there and Edward explains it to her in a couple of sentences. Edward and Alice's gifts are more easier to see on the big screen since they're so big and well, obvious. You can hide making people feel stuff but you can't really hide reading people's minds or seeing the future.

63MrsGrinch
Feb 1, 2009, 11:23 am

Yeah, but it was just strange and I wanted Jazz to have more screen time.

Message 63: True. But Jasper "isn't central to the family, always on the outskirts" as Bella notes.

66Hermee

Am really looking forward to the scene with Jasper near the beginning of New Moon when Bella cuts her finger. I hope Chris Weitz does a good job of it.

67G.A.B.E
Feb 3, 2009, 12:51 am

I want the scene where the werewolves, Emily and Bella are all in the kitchen together. It showed how loyal and homely they are, instead of wild, aggro monsters. Admit it, when you hear "werewolf" you think of a giant, savage wolf ripping someone's head off. Not a teenage boy, eating muffins and joking around with his brothers.

68MrsGrinch

Feb 3, 2009, 9:08 pm

I was surprised how subtle the sparkling in the sunlight was. I know lots of people were disappointed with that, I was too, but considering they had an unbelievably small budget for the movie I think they spent it in the right places.
And I was surprised how much I loved the Laurent actor. :)

78MrsGrinch
Feb 3, 2009, 9:10 pm

I really liked Esme. Even though she didn't do much.

79Hermee
Feb 3, 2009, 11:57 pm

I loved Esme too. She's so warm, loving and maternal, just as I imagined her only more so.

They experimented with a lot of things to try and make Rob sparkle and settled on sugar in the end.

80G.A.B.E
Feb 4, 2009, 12:34 am

Sugar? In the Movie Companion it said the sparkle was computer-generated .. maybe I read wrong :)
I loved the actress for Esme and Carlisle and the guy who played Laurent is a really cool person, from what I've seen in interviews.

81jade605
Feb 4, 2009, 1:48 am

I liked Alice alot she was pretty cool and very pretty.

82Hermee
Feb 4, 2009, 2:02 am

Odd coz it was Catherine Hardwicke herself who said that in a face-to-face interview. Perhaps I remembered it wrong then and she said that was one of the tested methods.

83G.A.B.E
Feb 4, 2009, 2:07 am

Maybe you're right and I'm wrong. I'll try to find the passage in the Movie companion with the sparkle thing and see which method it is :)
And yes, Alice is awesome!

84Hermee
Feb 4, 2009, 2:11 am

Wouldn't mind knowing what other methods they tried actually if you wouldn't mind posting them. Will be interesting to see what they experimented with.

85G.A.B.E
Feb 4, 2009, 2:28 am

Sure thing :) Catherine said something like (since time was running out the door), "If I didn't like the sparkle effect, I'd shoot it from across the meadow, if I liked it, I'd do a close-up." I guess she liked it :)
But I thought the "sparkle" sound made it sound cheap-o.

86Hermee
Feb 4, 2009, 2:46 am

It wasn't nearly as sparkly as I imagined, but he did sparkle a little and I understood why afterwards after learning of their difficulties to make him sparkle with a low budget. Wanted more time in the meadow more than anything because it was such a romantic moment as well as the idea the book was based on. Seemed such a shame that it was so short.

The sound didn't bother me, but it seems odd now you've pointed it out since sun doesn't make a sound. Just put it down to being part of the soundtrack really.

Feb 4, 2009, 12:34 pm

I loved the adding of the scene about the graduation caps. Very clever!

I wasn't thrilled with the whole sparkling scene either, but all in all they did a great job bringing this book to life.

93G.A.B.E
Feb 5, 2009, 12:41 am

I loved the graduation caps too, very funny. Most people in the packed-to-the-rafters cinema I watched Twilight in, all laughed at the "sparkle" sound. I think Naruto is pretty cool, I watch it alot and try to read the manga when I can :)

94Hermee
Feb 5, 2009, 12:50 am

Several, including me, laughed at the first biology scene. Just couldn't help it. Rob's expression was so funny. Instead of looking like he was trying to restrain himself from biting Bella and the class, he looked like someone had just released a bad smell and that he'd just realized it was Bella so was giving her a half amused and half disgusted look.

I loved the graduation caps as well. Was an excellent idea. Rob looked incredibly handsome in that scene too so I'm surprised you all noticed the caps. ;)

95G.A.B.E

yeah!
at least one of the actors in the movie actually liked and READ the books!

shouldnt they read them and do their research before they play the roles?

126MrsGrinch
Feb 18, 2009, 11:39 pm

Uhhhh kristen and Robert have both read the books like crazy. They always had the books on set. Rob also read a manuscript of Midnight Sun like crazy.

127Hermee
Edited: Feb 19, 2009, 12:42 am

Kristen and Rob also practiced their parts together every night, obsessing about how to get them just right, then kind of obsessed over them with the director prior to filming those scenes. They asked other actors to rehearse them beyond filming hours with them as well, but they weren't interested. (That doesn't mean they didn't take their roles seriously, but that filming days can be very long. Sometimes shoots can last 20 hours, which is probably what happened many days on the Twilight set as they had as many as four different kinds of weather conditions to deal with in Forks, including hail at times.)

Ok imagine you're in a romantic scene with your fave character (one that you'd like to kiss) and darn it, but it's just not going right (wink, wink) so you have to keep doing retakes. Now can you imagine it?

I think it was cool that the guy who played James (Cam) was totally obsessed with the books :) His girlfriend (now wife) got him into them.

Oh are they married now? Didn't know Cam was obsesses with the books. I like hearing that about the actors playing the characters. Shows dedication to their role. Peter Facinelli did a lot of research into history over the last 350 years to get into his role.
