Meyer has stated that her inspiration for naming her main male character "Edward" came from characters by the same name in two favorite novels - Edward Ferrars from Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" and Edward Rochester from Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre".

If anyone is familiar with these novels and these two characters in particular it would be interesting to hear viewpoints on how their personalities are reflected in Edward Cullen's personality.

Both Edward Ferrars and Edward Rochester are similar and different.

Edward Ferrars is a first born son of an aristocratic English family. He is shy and strives to marry for love rather than for money. He prefers a quiet country life.

Edward Rochester is also from an aristocratic family but moody. He falls in love with Jane because she is plain and simple but yet highly intelligent and a sharp contrast to society women.

Just a start - I realize that Meyer probably didn't think this in depth about the characters - but it is interesting.

I love EDWARD!!

I wonder who she named jacob after... probably after some smelly old bum, who tries to steal someone elses love, and passion

16Hermee
Jan 26, 2009, 5:43 am

Ick. He looks so ... so ... so ... evil. Perfect then considering that and I can imagine him with blond hair. He's not my idea of beautiful though. His left dimple and the shape of his lips give him a bizarre look instead. Can picture (Gaspard Ulliel) more as Demetri.

Found this link yesterday that shows four contenders and none seem beautiful to me: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20254479,00.html. What do you all think?

Tom Felton would have been perfect years ago in his cute phase, but his face is too mature now. Other than that he would be well suited for the role given his ability to play an evil character.

Don't know what they're thinking regarding Freddie Highmore. He's not even remotely beautiful and roles I've seen him in up until now have been more laid back characters. Nothing to stretch him as an actor.

Out of the four, Lucas Grabeel has the best look to me, but I've not seen him in anything so am not familiar with his acting ability.

"Edward Rochester is also from an aristocratic family but moody. He falls in love with Jane because she is plain and simple but yet highly intelligent and a sharp contrast to society women."

Next time I get a comment about Edward being unhealthy I'll ask if the person realizes who his character is originally based on. . .Maybe that will shut them up.

Wow Pretty sad when only like 2 people responded to this post actual QUESTION.

First also remember Edward Ferrars was not well liked it took awhile for us to like him, but once he showed his natural personality then his actions were better understood and made him even more likable. Much like Edward in the Book he didn't know how to act around Bella and once she understood why he did what he did it made her love him. What do you think?

Edward Rochester was passionate, but concealed things, like Edward Cullen had too. Meaning that he had a wife, and EC was a vampire. I could even call ER cold, and that is the way EC was at first.

So spacmann at least you got a little dialogue back on your original question.

80leperdbunny
May 28, 2009, 3:57 pm

Thanks for bringing this up, I have a much deeper appreciation of these literary nuances/references/whatever we want to call them.

I was thinking about this thread and I wonder if any of the other names have significance. Cull is to pick out or select something. . . Bella Swan is just cutesy, unless I am missing another reference.

81ibetonalice2
May 28, 2009, 7:35 pm

Doesn't Bella mean beautiful in like italian or something?
And when I think of a swan I also think of beautiful.
I don't know..just a thought.

82Muse_Freak1312
Edited: May 28, 2009, 7:46 pm

yeah, thats one of the things that the haters complain about, cause Bella Swan means Beautiful Swan.

I think its a bit of an intentional contradiction, cause Bella certainly doesnt think she is beautiful, and swans are meant to represent gracefulness, something Bella is not.

83guamgirl99
May 28, 2009, 7:59 pm

81: Yeah, Bella means beautiful in Italian. 99% sure.

May 28, 2009, 11:19 pm

>81 ibetonalice2:&82, yuppers you are correct. I do like the irony of the name. In the last book, it doesn't appear to be ironic anymore, because as a vampire Bella is truly beautiful and graceful for the first time in her (undead) life. Aw, I love it!!!

I feel Meyer did a beautiful job with many aspects of the book series that people don't take the time to appreciate/learn.

Wow, really? I thought my discussion was in the spirit of the original posters question/discussion (i.e related).

I agree, we should all post new threads when we are talking about things unrelated to the original post, but seeing as how you all obviously know eachother, you do talk within posts a lot about things not related to the original post. (Just look at this one for an example).
So, I'm sorry if I got the wrong impression about that.

Also, I enjoy discussions like this about etymology, metaphors, and references etc etc etc, so I can get carried away very quickly! :D I don't normally post in this group at all, and there doesn't seem to be any guidelines regarding posting etiquette within this group.
