I'd like to read al-Bukhari's Book of Muslim Morals and Manners soon - sometime later this year.

But what other hadith collections are out there? Ones that are available, that is.

And are there different hadith traditions for Sunni's and Shi'a's? How does that work? I know that the Sufi's have some collections, but I'm not big on mysticism - Muslim or otherwise.

You might want to read a general popular level background book such as Approaching the Sunnah by Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, written by the popular guy behind the famous IslamOnline (dot net not dot com) website. Even just all the ahadith collected by Bukhari is something like volumes, not sure, but you can browse some of the most authentic ahadith online at the Compendium of Muslim Texts MSA-USC Hadith Database (though there's been some self-censorship due to complaints about incitement in some of the ahadith).

Thanks for the suggestion. I have Approaching the Qur'an in my collection already and by a different author. Maybe I should read that first. But I'll get to the Sunnah book soon.
Also, I bookmarked the two sites. Especially the IslamOnline site is an interesting site. Thanks again.

Hmm. I can think of a few books about the ahadith, such as Ahmad Kassim's Hadith: A Re-evaluation and Hadith Literature: Its Origin, Development & Special Features by Siddiqi, Muhammad Zubayr. Not sure if any of the touchstones will actually work.

Other ideas include Introduction to the Study of Hadith Literature, by Alfred Guillaume; Traditions of the Prophet: Ahadith by Javad Nurbakhsh; John Burton's An Introduction to the Hadith; An-Nawawi's Forty Hadith and Forty Hadith Qudsi, both trans. by Ezzeddin Ibrahim and Denys Johnson-Davies.

Unfortunately I've not actually read any of those (they languish on my "to-read" lists along with dozens of others) so can't offer personal experience or guidance. :-/ Hadith study is an area that I've not delved into very much -- despite its huge importance, it seems a lot less interesting to me than other topics, for some reason.

I know that Shi'i ahadith are often much more focused on the ahl al-bayt, the Prophet's family, particulary on Ali, Hussein, Hassan, and Fatima (and with a hostility towards A'isha); and that they do not accept some Sunni ahadith whereas some Sunni do not accept some Shi'i ahadith.

I'd like to put your question to another forum I'm on and see what responses I can get from Muslims (including Shi'a Muslims) there.
