I was nudged by another LT member, Akeela who said she joined this reading thread and enjoyed it. So here I am with my reading list for 2009.
Actually I read more in my mother tongue (Malay language) and I challenged myself to finish only 50 a year. But who knows I can actually read more than I think I can?
For the purpose of this thread, I will start with the English books I've read so far. Towards the end of the year, I plan to add to the list the Malay books.
Up to now I finished:
1. The Alchemist
2. A Thousand Years of Good Prayers

Hi Ummu_Fatimah - it's fun here! Has she pointed you in the direction of the Reading Globally group too?

Welcome to the group, Ummu_Fatimah. I look forward to seeing what you are going to be reading throughout the year.

Welcome Najibah! Lovely to see you here!
Did you enjoy A Thousand Years of Good Prayers? I've added it to my to-be-read list, as LT-ers seem to rate it an excellent book of short stories.
Cushla's right — the Reading Globally thread is great! Speaking of which; I haven't read any Malaysian authors yet! Can you recommend someone who's been translated into English?
Happy reading!
terrible typo :(

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes. It really keep me in high spirit to speed up reading, so I can like 'report' about it here :). The latest book I read:
3. The Witch of Portobello
And:
@ cmt (Cushla) So far no, Akeela hadn't pointed me to Reading Globally yet. This thread would be great enough for now to keep. If not I wouldn't have enough time to read (am a slow reader).
@ Akeela Thank you so much for your suggestion. I can feel how it's going to be fun here. Yes, I enjoyed A Thousand Years of Good Prayers so much. It was beautifully written, with Chinese soul in it. The stories were also touching and legendary, feel huge like China herself.
About Malay authors, actually not many of our fictions are translated into English. I'd suggest Faisal Tehrani, but one of his books (and the first) still in translation process; a story about Malay prahu (or vessel).
There are authors writing in English, but not many: you can check at MPH, one of local bookstore.

What did you think of Witch of Portobello? I read it last year and it was my first Coelho book... I was highly intrigued and wanted to pick up his other works when I finished. I liked the interview-narrative style in which this was laid out as well.

@ dk_phoenix, sorry for a very late reply. My first read of Paulo Coelho was The Alchemist. Witch of Portobello was the second book. One of the reason it attracted me was the biographical style. I think the plots smartly arranged by the author.
My latest read in these few months:
4. The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
5. The Power of Creative Intelligence by Tony Buzan
6. Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup
7. White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
8. Asleep by Banana Yoshimoto
Now I'm reading Catcher in the Rye and The Last of the Angels.
Other than above I have read 13 other books in Malay language.
