I thought there were at least four of us planning to read Uhura's Song. I have my copy. Anyone else get theirs yet?

I'm in, I'm just waiting for my book to come in *chuckle* - that sounds like "my ship to come in" ;-)

I'm looking forward to reading this one, comes so highly recommended and it's been ages since I read a ST book.

Oh good! For a while there I thought I'd be reading it alone.
:oD
I'm almost afraid to admit this will be my first ever ST book. (Aside from some of the memoirs, that is.)

We own it!

Yes, your husband is the one who recommended it! Will you join us?

unfortunately, i can not join this one :( i am "over-booked" (ha ha ha) with my college studies right now AND i don't own any star trek novels. I read a bunch of short stories about 25 years ago by James Blish though. I really enjoyed those. if you make this a regualr thing, maybe I can join in next time ?

Ugh, Clam! You going to add to my leaning tower of Mt. TBR?

8littlegeek
Feb 25, 2009, 6:09 pm

Look at it this way, Morphy. If you just go ahead and read this book right away, the mountain just stays the same.

I am really struggling with this because I have what is probably a snobby aversion to novelizations and fanfic.

But littlegeek, it has 4.33 stars here on LT. How bad can it be?

*is afraid to check and see what Twilight is rated*

lol!

I do love the Uhura character, but I dunno....

Plus, I actually read my very first fanfic last week and it was really good. It was a mashup of Dr. Horrible and *BSG SPOILER ALERT* Gaeta's mutiny. Very clever.

Aww, come on. It'll be fun. I'm pretty sure GeorgiaDawn is joining in on this one, too.

I should go see who else owns it...

*waving hand*
Me! Me!

I have to get a copy. I thought I was going to pick one up last weekend and couldn't find it. I have placed it on hold through ILL at the library. I will begin as soon as it gets here.

This is my first StarTrek book, too.

I will have to pass. I'm not a Star Trek fan. *ducks behind a table to avoid thrown produce* I'm also 'overbooked' as sevedra so wonderfully put it. I finally picked up The Eyre Affair and still need to get The Stand for two other group reads.

Cal, I know what you mean. I have The Eyre Affair, but haven't started it. I am also reading The Stand for that group read. On top of that, I have discovered The Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris. There is never enough time. But, this is StarTrek! How can you resist?

Resistance is futile.

Hubby sez: "Consider it a good adventure and ignore that it's Star Trek."

When I read it 19 or so years ago, I remember liking it because Uhura was the main character rather than a supporting character. It really shows her as a leader.

But remember this is me trying to remember a book I read many years ago because I was madly in lust with this Trekkie and he recommended it.

#14 & #15 - Oh cool! Is that another LT group that is reading The Stand? Or are you guys two-timing us on Shelfari? ;o)

#16 - Morphy, I'm impressed you can even remember titles from 19 years ago.

I've owned it for ages, and read it several times. I'll be interested to see what you folks think.

My sister thinks it's very fun we're doing a group read of a ST book. She's the one that got me started on reading them. She bought me a couple of cassette audio versions years ago. They're fun to listen to, more like the shows, with sound effects for the transporter, phaser fire, etc. And I enjoyed the storylines so followed those up with other paperback books. I like how the books focus on the other characters. A couple of mine feature Dr. McCoy and Sulu. It's going to be good to read a Uhura perspective now.

I own all of the original numbered Star Trek Pocket Books, and have read most of them. Dunno if I've read Uhura's Song (I don't think I have) but I do know that the books I've read that focus on the secondary characters (Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty) have left me bored.

Clam, The King's Dear Constant Readers group here on LT is reading King's books in order of publication. February and March is The Stand.

#20 -AHH, so you have a bit of a Kirk obsession? ;o)

I'm only 19 pages into it, but so far Kirk has had as much page-time as Uhura.

I have been wanting to reread The Stand for 25 years!

22> Mostly, it's just that I really enjoy the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic. Though I must confess, I do love me some Jim Kirk.

#17 clam - I would NEVER betray LT or The Green Dragon! No way, no how! Join us with The Stand. This will be my second time reading it.

Yay! Uhura's Song arrived at the library today! I'll start it in the day or so.

30clamairy
Feb 26, 2009, 7:13 pm

Okay, I'll attempt it. Are you reading the original version, or the fleshed out Stand?

31GeorgiaDawn
Feb 26, 2009, 7:31 pm

I only have a copy of the longer version. That's what I read before so I'm reading it again. I think people are reading different versions. The story and main parts are the same.

Like many of King's books, it has it's slow parts through the first third of the book, but then it takes off.

32clamairy
Feb 26, 2009, 7:35 pm

Okay. I might see if I can rustle up a paperback copy, so I don't have to lug around that monster harcover. I have to finish with Lt. Uhura first. And with my latest ER book, too. So I won't be joining in for at least a week.

33GeorgiaDawn
Feb 26, 2009, 8:45 pm

I'm putting a hold on The Stand while I read about Uhura, too.

Okay my book came in today, so I'm starting it tomorrow. Sounds good!
