Has anyone read The Host? What did you think? I liked it much better than Twilight, but I' wonder if that is an age issue.

I agree with Alice. It was a bit weird in the beginning but it's AWESOME :D Definitely not better than Twilight but it's still a good read. And Stephenie Meyer said it will probably be a trilogy, with the next called The Soul and the third called The Seeker. WOOT :) Can't wait.

6 and 16: It was a struggle for me to get through the first half, but then it got really, really good so I'm eagerly awaiting book two. As much as I loved it though, I like the Twilight series more.

10: Can't wait also!

Heaps of people are saying The Host is confusing but I didn't find it confusing at all!? I thought it made sense.

19Hermee
Apr 6, 2009, 1:37 pm

I think I found parts confusing in the first half, but can't remember now. Would need to re-read it to be sure.

It was confusing at first, but I slowly picked up what was going on.

I think i'm going to read it. :)

22ravenblue
Apr 8, 2009, 8:24 am

I find Stephenie Meyer likes to describe ALOT in detail and in the Host she describes mega! So I found it to be a bit of a hard slog to get through. HOWEVER, I think this is Stephenie's magic...you know so much about the characters in detail that they become so real and when you finish reading one of her books you can't stop thinking about the characters. Does anyone else feel the same way???

23ibetonalice2

Apr 8, 2009, 9:34 pm

I like books that have really good descriptions :)

26All.Time.Lunatic.xX
Apr 8, 2009, 9:45 pm

Yes, very very good

27ravenblue
Apr 9, 2009, 8:31 am

Yes people, I'm a girl so Si senorita away!

I guess it depends on what the person is describing whether it holds my attention eg in Twilight I hated reading about in detail what Bella was cooking for her father and in the Host when the Soul was constantly describing the winding caves everytime she went down one.

I've also noticed Stephenie Meyer likes to use "chargrin" alot. Every character has "chargrin" at one time or another.

But like I mentioned before, after reading Host/Twilight I felt like I was really there because I knew so much detail so when each book finished I felt like I was loosing my best friend...does that make sense?

I love books that leave a little presence with me. So to Stephenie Meyer, don't stop describing and keep on chargrinnnnnnninng.

28yaakov
Apr 9, 2009, 1:47 pm

I agree, Stephanie Meyer writes much more about the characters and their inner thoughts and feelings (especially compared to most books about alien parasites......). The Host was a very emotional book.

29G.A.B.E
Apr 10, 2009, 3:24 am

I noticed about "chargrin". It was a little annoying but - meh. And yes, SMeyer has said that "she writes for her characters". Which I thought was really cool, mostly authors just write b/c they got an idea about a story and just have the characters to act it out, whereas, the characters (in Twilight) are the story. If that makes any sense (?)

30ravenblue
Apr 10, 2009, 5:00 am

that makes total sense. you're right, it is the characters themselves that make the book and how they react in certain situations.

can't wait for Stephenies next project...

31All.Time.Lunatic.xX
Apr 10, 2009, 11:16 pm

I don't like in Eclipse when they go waaayy into detail about the Quilette(sp?) legends and also Jaspers life, it's too long! But pretty intersesting i guess.

:)

32G.A.B.E
Apr 10, 2009, 11:35 pm

30: Me neither! :D

31: I just didn't really like Eclipse and I have NO idea why .. it had plenty of action, lots of drama between Edward-Bella-Jacob and other stuff but I just don't like it! I don't DISlike it but I don't love it like I do with Twilight & New Moon. Weird.

33All.Time.Lunatic.xX
Apr 11, 2009, 1:26 am

My favourite is New Moon and my favourite part is when Edward leaves!? I have no idea why! I think because it's like dramatic and sad without being tacky like Days of our lives sort of drama.

34G.A.B.E
Apr 11, 2009, 2:33 am

^ Agreed :) About the last part, I mean. I don't really have a favourite part. Hmm, maybe the prom scene in Twilight :)

35ibetonalice2
Apr 11, 2009, 2:40 am

My favorite is New Moon also.
I just finished re-reading for the 4th time about an hour ago.
I like the Volturi scene and when Bella and Jacob hang out before they find out the he is a werewolf..

36G.A.B.E
Apr 12, 2009, 12:31 am

Yeah, at first I HATED New Moon so badly but then I re-read it and I was like, "I LOVE THIS BOOK!" I just finished re-reading it for the fifth time two days ago! Me and Leah are gonna re-read it just before the movie comes out and then after :)
My fav scenes in all the books have to be:
Twilight: Prom scene
New Moon: Volturi scene & when Bella thinks about how she never meant to love Edward but now that she did, she couldn't live without him etc..
Eclipse: Bella & Jacob scene in the second to last chapter, always makes me cry!
Breaking Dawn: Wedding, Isle Esme & when Jacob imprints on Renesmee.

:)

37ibetonalice2
Apr 12, 2009, 12:53 am

Twilight: The chapter titled "The Cullens"
New Moon: The Volturi scene and Jacob and Bella in the garage.
Eclipse: When Rosalie, Jasper, and Alice share their stories. Also, the graduation party.
Breaking Dawn: Wedding, Jacobs POV, and just the entire third part of the book.

38G.A.B.E
Apr 12, 2009, 12:59 am

I loved Jasper's story! Especially about the part when he met Alice. A really nice quote by him is on my background:
"She was there - expecting me, naturally. I was not sure if she meant to attack. That's the only interpretation of her behaviour that my past had to offer. But she was smiling. And the emotions that were emanating from her were like nothing I had ever felt before."
I was just like, "AWWWWW" when I read that :D

39ibetonalice2
Apr 12, 2009, 1:04 am

"And you ducked your head, like a good southern gentleman, and said, 'I'm sorry, ma'am.'"
I almost melted!

Guess what I named one of my show pigs..
Adelaide :)
And I was thinking about you when I was driving home
from Wal*Mart lol. I was thinking that maybe I could get my parents
to give me a trip to Australia for my graduation gift 2 years from now
and I could come see you and maybe stay with you. I would come during
one of your holiday breaks. That would be too cool :)

52G.A.B.E

That would be so awesome! I'd show you all around and we could have one BIG, ENDLESS sleepover :) SQQQUUUUE! I actually had a dream where I met you at the airport, it was so cool and then I woke up and I was like, "Dammit!" :D
And Wal*Mart - LOL :) I love Wal-Mart.

OME, yum, especially the boysenberry icecream .. YUM! :D Australia in summer is awesome but it sucks in winter :)

57: LOL!

Global warming peoples. And it sounds weird but Ohio sounds like a warm place. But obviously, it's not :) I've seen snow a couple of times but it was only a little in Seattle. I went outside for like two minutes and touched it. It was powdery and weird-feeling, not how I expected snow to feel. It was sad :( It SHATTERED MY DREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

62bombardalicious2

^ I used to go out every second weekend and stay with my aunt and cousins in the country (Freeling) and it is just AWESOME. You can walk around all day and never feel unsafe or have to worry about rapist or people trying to steal your bag. We used to go and play in the school playground, go catch yabbies in the river, go play footie on the GIANT oval and just have the AWESOMEST time ever. I really miss doing that. :(

No but seriously I keep on seeing these exchange student program adverts on the TV and everytime I see them I think of Alice and I'm like, "It's a SIGN! A heavenly SIGN!" And I think that 'studied in Australia' looks pretty fancy on your college application. ;)

90G.A.B.E
May 7, 2009, 3:28 am

AND you could even stay with Athina b/c she takes in exchange students, she's had two or three in the past year and few months. So you wouldn't be staying with a stranger. :)
Okay, I know this is pretty pointless and far-fetched but I want you to come!!!!!!

98ldelprete
Nov 10, 2009, 11:49 am

I just finished the host and it was good. that's about it. It was not better than any of the twilight series but it was entertaining. It did start out slow but it was very good throughout the middle of the story. The end was a bit predictable but ok. I was hesitant to read this as well but I'm glad I did. I can't wait to see what else she comes out with.

Jan 7, 2010, 11:04 am

I really don't like scary movies, books, etc - but the Host didn't scare me - it was more suspense than scare. I'd say more Sci-Fi than Horror. It didn't keep me awake scared at night - and that IS saying ALOT because I get scared of unsolved mysteries, Beetlejuice, Scooby-doo...

It deals more with relationship issues, loyalties, loss and self-sacrifice.

The Twilight Series have always been my favorite, don't think I'll ever come across a book I like better...

I did read The Host as well as the Twilight Saga. I can't say I loved it as much but I did find it quite good. I could definitely 'see' it visually and thought it would make a good movie. I did get kind of swept away in the atmosphere but not as much as I did with Twilight. I'm in my forties as far as the age issue.

110wendychang

I read it and it was good. Also I heard that it might have a sequel.

111Angel26
Feb 9, 2011, 10:31 pm

If you haven't read The Host you should. It's a commitment though because the beginning is so slow. If you don't then you really are missing out on a really good book. It was such a haunting idea the tone is a little overly somber, but that's what the books about.

112magelet87
Mar 3, 2011, 3:14 pm

at first i was hesitant in reading the host because i am not a huge fan of science fiction alien stories. i mean, i have read my share but i dont love them like i love fantasy. but this reallly changed my mind on that kind of book. i absolutley loved The Host. i really enjoyed the plot and all the backstory, but it seemed a tad bit redundant because of the whole love triangle thing...
