Today is it...I am 40...

Today is my birthday. As I was thinking about the books I read in my teens and 20's I was wondering about you all. What did you read in your early adulthood? How did what you read then change to what you read now? How does it compare to what you read now in your 40's? Is it different or same?

I pretty much still love the same genre; fantasy/fiction. I have never enjoyed non-fiction.

I still read all over the place, since I have a wide variety of interests, but I read a lot fewer romances and mysteries than I did when I was younger. On the other hand, I am reading a lot more young adult books than I did when I was actually a young adult.

I read much less horror than I did when I was 20. Other than that, I still just pick up what appeals to me and am not a slave to what others think should be read.

I read much more non-fiction than I used to. My fiction reading now tends more towards non-stressful, comfort type books, and not so much mystery and sf/fantasy. I still read a lot of children's and YA fiction.

I think my reading choices have a lot to do with the whole marriage-and-children and not having a good solid chunk of time to get fully immersed in a 15 book series.

My reading has changed alot. I used to read for romance and to give myself some fuel for dreaming. Well I still do that. I am not fond of series any more. I guess for the same reason as you Sylvia. Not enough time. I do like historical ficiton more now than then. I read alot of young adult lit and funny, I like it better now. I used to read alot...a hugh amount of fantasy. I don't now....maybe I should think about changeing that.

There are alot of things in my life I want to change....I think I will start with my reading habits.

I read all of the LOTR books in high school/maybe early 20's. I would not have touched anything historical when I was younger, and now I love it. I read mostly chick-lit then, and now romances/Nicholas Sparks/etc. are the last thing I would ever choose to read. I also read non-fiction now, and wasn't interested in that in my 20's.

alcottacre, I read more YA now, also.

And kevmalone, I haven't graduated to large print yet, but I keep increasing the magnification of my reading glasses:)

I'm still all over the place with my reading selections but I do read a lot more non-fiction than I did in my youth and in my 20's. I'm now reading "literature" that I should have read in high school/college. In my 40's I discovered such great works as "Grapes of Wrath", "East of Eden", "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "The Good Earth" to name just a few.

I still read a wide variety of books, but have added on to that by reading more non-fiction, biographies, and memoirs. When I was young, I wouldn't have had the patience to be able to read those types of books on a regular basis.

Some time in my late 20s I shifted from a mix of fiction and non-fiction to almost entirely non-fiction. Can't say why; it just appeals to me more now. I read only a few novels a year, but many more non-fiction titles.

At 42 I got my first reading glasses--not because of reading, but because my job at the time required that I sometimes read really tiny (about 7 or 8 point) numbers printed on the undersides of cell phones.
