What were Eliot's views on communism in general and Russia under Stalin in particular? This sounds like the intellectual criticism of the communist bashing that was taking place at that time. Of course Orwell's view won out over time, but I am never more amazed than when I think of otherwise reasonable people, even with their limited knowledge, supporting Stalin and his communism. Of course, it's the same kind of support we gave Saddam Hussein during the eighties.

I think that Eliot is saying that "If your objective was to convince that Trotsky was right, Stalin wrong; then you have failed".
This review came right at the end of WWII when US/UK/CCCP were about to carve up Europe, I guess Eliot's implying "don't rock the boat" so more like "the enemy of my friend is my enemy"!
