Chapter 6, vs 13.
וְשָׁבָה וְהָיְתָה לְבָעֵר

(I have tried everything I can think of to enlarge the font size for the above Hebrew, but have not been able to do so. It appears that certain SPAN Html codes are forbidden.)

Most commentaries speak of textual problems with the last part of the verse, but there are inconsistent translations even for the first part.

Shub seems to be the verb, with a feminine singular subject, QAL perfect - to return. So JPS translates "it shall repent" and the NRSV translates "it shall be burned again."

The Bible and Mishneh site that Marc Beherec gave me yesterday, translates. "it shall again be eaten up" .

I think these last two translations take the finite and independent verb "shub" as indicating continuation or repetition of the subsequent Hayah + infinitive construction.

The whole first verse, then literally: "And still in her a tenth and she will return and she will be burned."

Less literal: "And though in her a tenth and the tenth returns then the tenth will be burned."

This would then seem to be a picture of total destruction.

I am here mostly as a lurker for this discussion. I hope to learn by being here. I may comment from time to time but don't really anticipate talking very much.

Thanks for starting this up. I look forward to the discussion.

geneg and Marc

Thanks for considering to join this group. I had already started a thread on Isaiah 6 in the christianity group.

Since it was started there, I am thinking it best to continue that thread in that group. It may give some time to market the Isaiah group to members of Christianity.

Please feel free to comment on Isaiah 6 in Christianity. The next thread on Isaiah will be posted here, but for now the active Isaiah thread is in Christianity.

I'm keeping up with both threads so I'll catch the discussion wherever it takes place.

Chapter 6 is the story of Isaiah's call, and as such, some point out that it might be appropriate as the start of the Book of Isaiah.

It however does not start the whole book. It may be that Chapter 6 can be viewed as the start of a smaller book - Chapter 6, 7, and 8 (through 8.18 at least)

If this is the case then Chapter 6 would be written at mid career for Isaiah, during the Syro-Ephraimite conflict and all the intrigue concerning the anti-Assyrian coalition. Isaiah is counselling against joining the coalition and also against calling Assyria to defend Israel.

This latter, as Isaiah recognized, would be to submit to Assyrian domination, which condition might be considered as what is described in the prophecy in Chapter 6.11-13.

If the political situation is taken to be the context for Chapter 6, then it may not be correct to interpret the chapter as Isaiah's call to preach against personal sin and to call for personal righteousness.

The message that is being ignored in verse 10 is the call to trust in Yahweh's defense and not to subject Judah to Assyrian domination.

This is how I read the chapter.

According to Dr. George Stoeckhardt , in "Isaiah: The First Twelve Chapters", page 61, "even the final tenth will be eradicated. These words contain a description of the Last Judgement." :
