Group Movie Watch IV

Welcome to the Group Movie Watch (IV) thread! If you are new to our group (or to the group movie watch), welcome! We watch movies every Saturday night at 9:30 LibraryThing time (Eastern USA time). Anyone is welcome to join us -- just grab a copy of the week's movie selection and join us in the chat room. We will all start watching together, and comment along as we watch.

Since everyone is hesitant to host in August, we will do free-for-all nights on August Saturdays -- if you are free on Saturday night, drop in to chat, and whoever shows up can choose a movie to watch.

I'm just letting everyone know that I'm still able to run my movie this weekend, hope to see yoy guys there!

Me too lg. I haven't been around lately on Saturdays, or had access to the chat room. I'd like to host but I don't know when I'll be gone to Washington yet.

Something has come up in regards to my movie night on June 13th -- a college friend sprang party plans on me a few days ago, and I said "Great!" . . . completely forgetting that I was supposed to host the movie that night. Would it be okay with everyone if we moved that movie watch to the evening of June 14th?

If you did, I could do it. (June 13th is roller derby night.)

btw, foggi, which version of Phantom of the Opera were you thinking? There's been several.

eta: Realizes that you young'uns probably have no interest in the Lon Chaney, Sr. silent version CLASSIC nor the half-way decent Claude Rains versons, but instead must subject me to the horrors of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Even Gerard Butler can't save that for me.

Still, it does make it seem more horrible to me. ;-)

#8 -- Yes, alas, the most recent version (with Gerard Butler) was the one I had in mind, if only because it's going to be the easiest for everyone to get their hands on. I'll have to track down the others you've mentioned some time, though!

1: Foggi, I can host Master and Commander on July 11 or 18. Maybe the 4 and 24 can be Harry Potter movies.

5: kirby, When you do know your schedule we should reschedule Kate and Leopold.

8 + 9: LG and FD, Once I rented the Weber Phantom and by mistake they sent some horror version. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out it was the wrong one. I remember the credits looked cheesy and then some guy was attacked and lost his legs!

ETA: 6: Foggi, June 14 works for me!

June 14th would mean I should be able to be there for it, Foggi, so it's fine with me!

compski, I love Master & Commander! I'm such a giant Patrick O'Brien fan and the movie was pretty good at getting the flavour of the novels. (Although they left out Stephen's spying.)

This thread and the homepage have been updated. Compski and Kirby, do you want to retry your movie watch selections on the 11th and 18th? If so, who wants which night? We need to make a decision on that soon so people can get copies of your movies.

I put down Order of the Phoenix for July 4th, hosted by "Dobby" (aka, whoever shows up). It doesn't have to be Order of the Phoenix -- I just thought people might want to watch that one to refresh their memories in time for the upcoming release. I'm still not sure if I'll be there or not that evening.

Kirby, maybe you should pick a weekend in August that you know you will be back for and someone else can do the extra weekend in July. Maybe the fourth could be a different HP movie, I could do the 11th, and the 18 could be OotP.

I just want to let everyone know that I'm still hosting this weekend. I have a new DVD player, so I shouldn't have anymore issues there.

The heat out here (104F/40C) got to the chat room about a couple of hours ago. It's up and running now, with a new powerful fan keeping it cool. If it crashes again, I am going to move the server into the house.

I don't have tonight's movie but may stop by all the same. My family's about to start Inkheart but it will be the second time that I've seen it.

We did our fireworks already, and now I am in chat, if anyone cares to join me. I don't have a movie in, but I could if we wanted one.

Are we sticking with the regular time on the 26th? Just wondering, I know people will be traveling that day so we don't want it too early, but people also have to work the next day...

....and there might be a new Doctor Who on that day...

Well, I don't think we'll be discussing the movie for as long as it would take to watch a movie, if that makes sense, so I don't anticipate being up as late as we usually are on Saturday evenings. We could go a little earlier if we need to, but too early and it gets really inconvenient for the west coast -- and I'm hoping some or all of that meet-up group will come chat.

What time would not conflict with Dr. Who?

Apparently, I should have checked the BBC's schedule first, because it's showing earlier than the last new Who and 9:30 will actually be perfect. So nevermind, nothing to see here, go back to what you were doing. :)

I watched Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium! (Did I spell his name close to correctly?) It was lovely! I'm sorry to have been a couple weeks late but I am glad I got to see it. There are some really great lines in there!

I was pretty sure you'd like it. It feels like the kind of magical place we would all frequent if we could!

Don't forget Saturday we are going to try Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World again.

If we get home from the wedding in time and there's no baseball game, I'll join you guys. I love that movie. It gives a pretty decent "flavor" of the books. (But read the books!)

Any takers for August movie watch dates (August 1, 8, 15, 22, or 29)? Remember, if you can't host on the normal day/time, we can arrange for the movie watch to happen at a time that fits your schedule! We need someone to take August 1 ASAP, so people can get their hands on the selected movie.

Nobody? We could do a Princess Bride re-watch on the first, since that's a movie lots of us have on hand. Or we could take a break from doing the movie watch for a while, if everyone's lost interest.

I've been hesitant to host in August because I seem to keep having plans crop up...

Okay . . . is anybody going to be around for a movie this evening? I'm planning on watching something -- but I don't know what, yet, and I don't really know when, either. I'll try to remember to stick my head in to the chat room around the usual time.

Also, do we want to go back to the member-hosted format for September? PollyAnna, do you have a movie picked for the 12th? Does anybody want to host the 5th, 19th, or 26th? If we're doing one on the 5th (that's a holiday weekend in the USA, so I'm not sure what impact that might have on a movie watch), we need to pick it soon so people can get it.

hhhmm, I've always been a fan of A Christmas Carol. I also love all the kids christmas shows, especially Charlie Brown.

The Family Stone isn't actually a Christmas movie but it does take place over the Christmas holiday. It's another favorite.

I would love to but know I'm not going to get the Saturdays off. I also have to take my laptop in to get assistance getting our chatroom to work on it because it's blocked. I hope everyone has a wonderful time watching the movies together, though!

I would love to watch Miracle on 34th street with you guys (I love the 1994 version because that's the one I used to watch when I was younger) but it would have to be a Saturday after December 11th because that's when I get vacations from college :P

I like Home for the Holidays, but that's Thanksgiving. I just love Robert Downey, Jr. sober or not. Planes, Trains & Automobiles, too. I guess I like Thanksgiving movies better than xmas ones.

Okay -- We have the following Saturdays coming up:

11/28
12/5
12/12
12/19
12/26

I won't be in town this Saturday (11/28). However, don't let that stop you! If anyone is planning on being around and wants to watch something, post here so that everyone will know. That would be a good weekend to watch one of the Thanksgiving movies mentioned above.

Since time is short, I'm proposing the following schedule:

12/5 -- Scrooged (1998)

12/12 -- A Christmas Carol (1999 version with Patrick Stewart)

12/19 -- The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974 version)

12/26 -- Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version)

That covers most of the suggestions made above. It puts the shortest one on the day of the gift exchange -- we could even watch it right after the gift exchange, if that would be more convenient than trying to watch it later in the evening. Is 9:30 LT time on Saturday evening still good for everyone? If the majority want it at a different time, we could move it.

What do you all think about the suggested schedule? Who's planning on watching?

I love The Year Without a Santa Claus! I hope I'll be able to make that one. And I have the old Miracle on 34th Street but I don't think I would be able to join the group watch anyway. I'd probably have some family thing. I'm looking forward to this next month. I love Christmas movies and the group watches are so much fun.

I got Scrooged! in the mail today. I am ready for Saturday.

I picked up Scrooged from the library today, so we should hopefully be there. I make no promises.

*Sigh* For the third week in a row, I forgot about the movie watch, remembering only after it was scheduled to start. So, if anyone has been there for the movie watch the past few weeks, sorry! I hope you had fun! I guess I've gotten out of the habit of remembering that it's movie watch time.

That said, if anyone is interested in continuing movie watches in January, post here, and we can pick movies! Otherwise, I will take it off the group homepage, and we can just do occasional movie watches when the opportunity comes up (for instance, a HP marathon before the next movie release might be fun). Or, instead of weekly movie watches, we could do one a month. . . .

Okay, I went ahead and took the Group Movie watch off the homepage, along with the link to the adventure threads, since we haven't done one of those in a long while. I left the link to the chatroom, obviously!

The Green Dragon has a set day of the week when people are likely to be in chat (or they did at one point; I'm not sure if that's still the case). I thought it might be nice for us to try to set a weekly time when people might be in chat. Is there a day or evening that's good for a lot of people?

I always forgot about the group movie watches or I didn't have time for them. The ones I went to were fun though. So I think an HP marathon before the new movie would be a good idea.

I enjoyed the group movie watches so I will be sad to see them go! Maybe one a month wwould be good. I also like the idea of a HP marathon before DH comes out.

Every now and then I think, boy, it would be nice to do another group movie watch! So, since I am doing some thread resurrections today, I thought I would go ahead and bring this one back to life.

Why don't we plan on having a movie watch some time in April? (Not the first weekend, as people may be busy because of the holiday.) Anybody have suggestions of which weekend in April, or what they'd like to watch? It can be something we've seen already, or something new.

I've recently fallen in love with Lars and the Real Girl and think everyone should see it. That would be my suggestion.

I think we should do HBP for sure! Skiing will be done by April, so any of the weekends should work for me. I just need to look into getting another battery. I don't think my laptop will make it through a whole movie and it is hard to sit at my desk and watch.

#93 -- Ooh, you're right . . . apart from the get-togethers to see it in theaters, we have not yet done a group movie watch of HBP.

Not that you have to plan around me, but I'll be out of town the weekend of April 24 for a marathon. And HBP is a great idea.

Sorry foggi, Saturdays at 9 PM is when Doctor Who is on, I'm not going to be up for a movie watch until mid-July at the earliest.

Who's up for a movie watch in July? I am going to make some more polls, as I thought that was pretty useful. I'm not even going to bother with the 4th of July weekend, since I'm pretty sure lots of us will be doing other stuff.

I will have to say no to all of them this month. One because I always seem to forget and two because if all goes well I will be busy moving into my new house!

They are probably all undecided for me but if I know when they are and have the movie I will try and make a couple. It has been a long time since I got to join a movie watch.

Of the few that have responded, it looks like July 24th is going to be the best weekend in July. Does anyone have a movie suggestion? Also, would 8:30 LT time work for everyone else?

8:30 is good here. I'm flexible too though. I was thinking there was a movie I thought would be fun to watch with everyone but now I don't remember what it was. Man in the Iron Mask, maybe? But that doesn't sound right... I'll see if I remember.

Have we watched The Count of Monte Cristo together yet? (I'm thinking of the 2002 version.) That would be a good one!

I think Stranger than Fiction was what I was thinking originally, though I do love Man in the Iron Mask too. But Stranger than Fiction is a book-lover movie if ever there was one. :)

#134 -- I don't think we're looking at the 10th, it's the second-worst option of the four.

The 17th is now looking slightly better than the 24th -- should we shoot for that, everyone? Any "undecideds" on the 24th want to weigh in? And it looks like our movie choices are:

The Count of Monte Cristo
Stranger than Fiction

Anybody have thoughts about which of those they want to watch? If we choose now, people will have time to track it down.

The only one of those I know is Stranger than Fiction and we watched it back in Feb. 2009.

Is it too late for other suggestions? I was thinking there were some more recent movies that might work:

Star Trek is a great candidate for a movie watch! (I'm sure X-Men Origins: Wolverine is, too, but I haven't seen it yet.) We should probably choose one pretty soon, though. My top two picks from the ones listed would be The Count of Monte Cristo and Star Trek.

And shall we try for the 17th? Is that still okay with those who voted "yes" for that date? Or I guess we could do both weekends (17th and 24th). I just realized that my wording was ambiguous; I was thinking that we'd continue doing one movie watch a month, and the polls were to narrow it down to the date when the most people could attend . . . but from some responses, it sounds like maybe you guys thought I was advocating going back to doing one every week. Sorry if I confused everyone!

Any thoughts on this? The weekend is sneaking up on us!

I can meet for Star Trek, but I don't have The Count of Monte Cristo. If you all want to meet for that, I don't mind. Maybe we can do Star Trek next month.

Okay, those of us at the movie watch decided that the first two weekends in August are not great for us, so the next movie watch will be either August 21 or August 28. We'll be watching The Count of Monte Cristo. So, here are the polls to determine which weekend would be better for everyone:
