BACKGROUND:
This is not an award given on an individual performance, or an individual recording, or record sales, or movie roles. It does not equate to the Oscars or the Emmys or the Tonys. This is an “award” based on a magazine’s selection (and the committee who decides who will receive the honor) of who they believe will make an impact on Hollywood and the entertainment industry. It is based on their interpretation of who has excellent buzz, who the industry is talking about, who is and has the potential to be a real breakout performer. The magazine in question is Movieline.
In the 1990’s, Movieline was once a really well respected and a good general-interest movie mag with a paid circ of over 300,000. In 2003 they expanded coverage to all entertainment, changed it from a movie lover’s magazine to just another fluffy, fashion and celebrities magazine, and renamed it Hollywood Life — lost their way completely. They stopped magazine publication for a few months, rebuilt the magazine and in April 2009, Movieline Magazine was back. The publishers still run two connected Websites - Movieline.com and Hollywood Life - and Hollywood Life still hosts awards shows.
