Vassily Aksyonov died last Monday in hospital in Moscow (he had suffered a stroke and been in a coma for over a year). He was 76. Aksyonov, an MD by training, was an internationally admired novelist - and a cultural hero, I am given to understand, in his mother country. I remember him as a not overly demanding professor, a soft-spoken, nicotine redolent charmer with a passion for life and literature.

Thanks for the post. Though it's been a lot of years The Burn remains one of my favorite novels.
