I picked up World's End, and fell in love. Wow. The characters of this series are fascinating, and art is gorgeous. Anyone else out there absolutely obsessed The Sandman?

This series was my introduction to graphic novels and comic books. I never used read comic books, not even staples like Marvel comics. The only reason I ventured near The Sandman is the fact that Neil Gaiman wrote it. Can anyone recommend similar comics, or just any really enjoyable ones?

I love the Sandman series. After you get through it there are a couple of spin-offs notably Lucifer by Mike Carey, and a couple of one shots like Death: the High Cost of Living

Make sure you read the whole Sandman series. Each volume can be read alone, but there are wonderful threads throughout the series. Gaiman also wrote other comics series.
A few other fantasy series I liked:
Mouse Guard by David Petersen
The Keepers of the Maser by Massimiliano Frezzato
Concrete by Paul Chadwick
Promethea by Alan Moore
Castle Waiting by Linda Medley
Fables by Bill Willingham
Black Hole by Charles Burns

Some autobiographical work:
Persepolis by Marianne Satrapi
Blankets by Craig Thompson
Mouse by Art Spiegelman

Most of these books are available in good libraries

A little over a month ago I ordered the first volume, to try it out. I'm new to graphic novels - Watchmen being the one and only I owned for a few years until recently. I enjoyed it, ordered the next three...and then ordered the rest of the series. I'm on the sixth volume now, and I really enjoy them. Gaiman does a wonderful job and I've been trying to convince other people to give them a shot.

Neil Gaiman has other graphic works, including Neverwhere and Coraline, which both are also topnotch novels.

I would actually recommend reading the other Sandman in order, because while there are many standalone stories, there is a general storyline to it, and millennia old entities can change.

I would also recommend:
Swamp Thing by Alan Moore
Animal Man by Grant Morrison
Unwritten by Mike Carey (not yet collected)

I am honestly not a huge fan of the visuals in the Sandman series, but Gaiman is as great as ever and the character designs, if not the actual visual renderings, are well done.
It does kind of stick in one's head, doesn't it?

Actually, when I bought the first volume of Sandman, I also bought the first volume of Moore's Swamp Thing. I've since bought the second volume, but I haven't read it yet as I have been busy reading Sandman instead.

I started with Worlds End as well, then when back and read the whole series in order I did of enjoy the Lucifer spin off by Mike Carey (overall plot was good) but its completely different from Sandmand. You might want to take a look at Fables. Although if you are a crime lover I am thoroughly enjoying 100 Bullets.

I have a big number of volume 1's in my library... now slowly building the series :)

I would second the recommendation for Castle Waiting and for Fables.

Has anyone looked at the huge Absolute Sandman volumes? They're great and have some additional material in them. There is an Absolute Death apparently coming out, I think, later this year (although the publication date has already changed once).
