Prologue
My name is Roxy Layleen and I’m telling this story because I can tell you exactly how my mother died and she died when I was two weeks old. My father never once told me this story so I don’t know it because it was told to me. No, I can picture it, sense it, and even tell it. I know it, because I know it. My mother died because of me, because of the sent I gave off. Because of my bloodline I am like royalty to all werewolves. My very great grandmother was the first wolf that changed into human. Because of that my sent as a wolf is very strong. Not to mention I am a girl and have the chance of changing. That has not happen since the white werewolf, the first werewolf on earth. Also known as my very great grandmother. At two weeks a werewolf’s child’s sent is the strongest it will ever reach in its lifetime. My sent was very powerful. A tracker tracked my sent at this point of my life and the bullet he or she shot missed me by a fraction of a centimeter and shot through my mother’s heart instead. So, because of my sent at two weeks old my mother died.
Chapter One:
Meeting Dr. Swartz
She knows how her mother died. That’s a really scary thing to say when you’re a thirteen-year-old who’s almost a werewolf. Yes, I said werewolf. The almost part I’ll explain later. I’m the narrator not the actual wolf. Let’s just get that straight now.
The wolf was sitting in Dr. Swartz office telling him why the wolf thought she was here. Here’s what the wolf (fine girl) said.
“My name is Roxy Layleen and I am here because I have this vision about how my mmom died. And what's even stranger then that it is acctually true!" That's what the girl said.
Okay maybe I’m not just the narrator but also the wolf. What can I say, I have a sick sense of humor.
“ Roxy can you explain to me what you mean by very great grandmother this is one of the parts of your statement I can’t understand,” Dr. Swartz asked me.
“By very great grandmother I mean that I have to say great so many times before I say grandmother. So because of this I just say very great grandmother. You said this was one of the things you had a question about. Do you want to ask me to clarify the others?” I said in response to the doctor’s question.
“Yes please, I only have one more, the part about the white werewolf. You said that there was only one in the history of werewolves and she happened to be the only girl also, right?” Dr. Swartz asked to make sure he was following this right.
“Yes my grandmother was not only the first werewolf and the only werewolf that was a girl but she was also the only werewolf that was a white werewolf. Any other questions?” Roxy asked sounding very polite, which was very unlike her.
"Actually yes. When a werewolf mates does it only have male children, with the exception of you of course?" Dr. Swartz asked very curiously.
"That is a good question but the answer is no. Werewolf children can be both male and female, but only the male descendents will become werewolves. This has to do with something called a wolf count. A wolf count is how much wolf-DNA is in your blood stream. This number can not be more than 32. People who are not descendents of werewolves have a wolf count of 0. But if you are a male werewolf descendent you have a wolf count of 32. When they turn 13 they suddenly have low blood pressure. The reason behind this is unexplainable. For some reason low blood pressure and a 32-wolf count make you morph into a werewolf. But if you are a female descendent you have a 30-wolf count and will never get low blood pressure. Also the 30-wolf count will not excel to 32-it will always stay 30. But another problem I have developed is that I have low blood pressure. But that is not what we are here for.” I said answering Dr. Swartz’s question.
“Thank you for the explanation you gave without me prompting you to do so. But now that you have said all that I have another question, Oh and if you don’t want to answer any more questions at any point please say so. The question is does the wolf blood count effect your behavior or diet at all?”
“Yes it effects both behavior and diet. As of the behavior it effects that we have inhuman abilities the basic ones that everyone gets are super speed and strength. As of diet we have to eat a 3000-calorie diet per day. That is for both 30 and 32 wolf count. It also effects one more thing for a 32-wolf count person. They have to feast on blood, human, once a month. Which all of the pack does together at the full moon? But that is a very long thing that maybe we can talk about at out next meeting. Did I answer your question.”
“Yes you did very toughly I would really like to hear about the feeding of blood at our next meeting. Well I can ask the rest of my questions at our next meeting. But now lets get onto the subject of why you’re really hear. The vision of your mother’s death.” Dr. Swartz said.
As he said this he looked me in the eye as if he was asking me for his trust. Like I would give anyone outside of my pack my trust! The only reason I trust my pack is because, “pack is family that is law.” It wasn’t that I was scared of anyone outside my pack it was just that well you'll understand. Few people know this about me. Actually only 3 people do, Ray- my best friend in the world, My Dad, Jason- My dad’s best friend, who is like an uncle to me. These people are the people who I trust most in my life and hopefully that will never change. But hope will never come through.
“Feeding of blood. I like that saying but I sill like the feasting upon blood better. Hmm… vision nice way of putting that too. I guess I never really thought of it that way. Hey maybe I can see the past! Just kidding! Like that’s even possible. But anyway the fact of my mother. As I said before I can sense and picture it. It is like I am living that moment right then and there. It’s actually kind of creepy if you ask me.” I said adjusting my ponytail.
Yes it is an unusual thing to experience. Is there anything else that is just a little bit like this? Something that could have caused you to say that you can se the past. Because through the tone of your voice it sounded as if you actually believed it but just dismissed the idea.” Dr. Swartz asked me.
As he said this he inclined slightly forward. A very small incline that anyone could have missed if they were not very observant. Automatically my right hand went right to the small of my back where a gun was in an in-pants holster. Even thought I can tear a human being to pieces by hand I still prefer to use a gun. If you shoot in the right places it can kill you instantly plus it is a safer way to hide myself from trackers. Trackers would come running if they heard that a man had been torn apart limb by limb. Though the only thing I know about guns is how to shoot one, hold one, and take care of one (one of the kids in the pack is a huge gun fanatic and supplies us all with what would fit us best). I still felt more confident with a gun in my hand then with nothing but my strength and running to help me. Dr. Swartz must have noticed something wrong because he jerked back. I guess I moved to fast for the guy. Happens all the time, it’s one of those thing you have to get used to.
“Is something wrong doctor?” I asked my hand still at my back with my thumb hovering over the safety.
“No I was just surprised by your movement. It seemed as if you are uncomfortable all of the sudden. Is something bothering you, all of the sudden? Do you not want to answer my question?” As he said this something crossed in his eyes, fear maybe. I guess he was scared of my fluid movements. That actually surprises me. People have been scared when they saw my gun but never because of my quick movements, very unusual.
“No nothing is bothering me I just am very fidgety. The answer to your question is no I have never had another … what’s the right word I’m looking for? Well vision I guess you could say. Also I just said the comment about seeing into the past because my friend had used this phrase a couple of days ago.” This was only partly true. I have had visions other then the one with my mother before. But again trust comes into play again. The only reason I had told him all about werewolves was because I could sense that he already knew all the answers to my questions and just wanted to test me on my knowledge of my own kind. Th question was why? Oh yeah the sense thing is just something else us werewolves have. We can sense different stuff about humans.
“Oh okay well do you want to talk about anything from your vision before you share it?” The doctor said picking up a yellow legal pad off the coffee table in between us.
“Yes actually I do. One thing I have to tell you, is that when I was a baby, because of me being a werewolf I could sense something was wrong the night of my mother’s death. Also I knew what was happening all except the death and what the bullet was. Up until then it was like I was already a teenager. I knew what everything was and all that goody stuff. It’s hard to explain. Maybe you will understand once I finish telling the vision. Oh yeah and just because I am telling the vision does not mean I am having it. I have had this vision so many times I can tell it without even seeing it.” I said my gun hand resting on the seat of the chair but still close to my gun.
“Perhaps I will. Anything else you would like to add or are you ready to share?” He said writing down something, probably what I just said. Well what ever he can do whatever he wants. Hey you know what maybe he’s just doodling. You know like they do in movies. Now that would be funny. What can I say, I have a sick sense of humor. Doesn’t every one… well, maybe it’s only a couple of people.
“Not that I can think of right this moment. So I guess I should share.” I said settling back and moving my hand away from my gun. If Dr. Swartz really wanted to hurt me, I could run out of here faster then he could get out of his chair.
“I guess you should but only if you want to. Though this is the reason we are here that does not mean you have to share this story right away. If you feel too uncomfortable than please stop at any point.” Dr. Swartz said. He was starting to get on my nerves! I am not a person who tries to get in touch with their emotional side. The only reason I was here was to find out why I was having these visions. But I had a feeling that might change. To answer his question I just started to tell him my vision.
‘That day was a cold winter day. My mother and father had taken me out to the store.
When we arrived home my father had locked the top lock on the front and back doors and had gone all around the house to lock all the windows. In the week I had been home from the hospital he had never did this. He turned and looked at my mother who was in the kitchen cooking super. She had put me in my playpen and had given me a rattle that my very great-grandmother had once owned. It was sliver and when shaken it sounded as if Santa’s sleigh was right there in front of you. I have always thought it was the most wonderful thing ever.
“Today she is two weeks olds. Her sent has finally settled. Today it will be the strongest it will ever be in her lifetime. Her sent will smell beautifully because of her bloodline. Tonight be have to be very cautious.” My father had said in a very serious voice. He leaned down to pick me up out of my crib. He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead and set me in my highchair.
I looked at my mother face to see concern firing in her eyes. But the concern quickly disappeared when she saw me looking at her. She started to set the table and my father helped.
Later I lay in my crib looking out side watching the fresh snow fall. My mother lay on the bed that was next to the crib watching me.
My father came in and kissed my mother on the forehead letting out a peaceful sigh. One that said he was happy that this was his family and that he loved both my mother and me. He sat down in the rocking chair that was in the corner of the room. I watched my father as he did this. When he had settled in the chair he met my gaze with happiness gleaming in his eyes. I could tell he was very proud of me. It made me feel security, something that everyone should feel. I turned my head back to look out the window, back at the white wonderland right outside my home.
After awhile I noticed some light in the woods that surrounded our cozy little cabin. The light was moving towards us, towards me and my mother and father. I could sense something was wrong but I couldn’t place what it was.
Before any of us could place what was happening there was a tracker at the edge of the forest. He shot the gun he was holding and the bullet was so fast. The bullet pierced the glass and it shattered. The bullet didn’t care it continued to rush towards me I didn’t move my head at all but some how it missed me. It whizzed past my ear. I could hear it and also feel the wind rush past my ear. The bullet continued through my crib. He shot through my mother’s heart. Killing her instantly. Killing an innocent woman. My gaze turned back to the window I saw the light that the gunman had held bobbing it’s way through the forest faster then when it was coming.
I looked back at my mother; my father was already at the bedside.
Being the child I was I thought my mother had fallen asleep. But still I could tell something different was going on something very bad. I started to scream my lungs out; the high pitched scream that mostly only babies can do. I watched my father’s shoulders shake. I heard all the gasps and cries coming from his mouth. It was like this for awhile. After he had shed all the tears he could he got up and picked me up. He cradled me so my face was buried in his chest, the tears from my eyes soaking his shirt. He tucked my head underneath his chin and stroked my back. He kept saying, “Shhh. Shhh. It will be alright.” over and over again, trying to calm me down. Finally I stopped crying and fell asleep, my cheek pressed against his water soaked shirt.
I was asleep when the pack arrived. They searched the forest until they found the campsite where the tracker was staying they put him in the cellar to be eaten on the next full moon.
“On the full moon he would take back what he had done to the pack by being their food, Their blood source that they need once a month. Betray the pack and you pay. Broken hearts will always be there but at the most they can do is take revenge from the killer and you do that by them being the pack’s blood source, the pack’s food. The trackers go from the top of the food chain to the bottom in the blink of an eye. And you can always trust the pack that revenge will be taken, because pack is family that is law. The only thing that was wrong was that there only was one person to represent my mother. That wolf was Ben’s (my father) best friend, Jason. Since I was too young to go to Under the Moonlight and also at the time we didn’t now I was ever going to have the chance at going and my dad was a retired wolf, Jason, who was also the pack leader, was going to represent our family. Even now I wish I could have been at that Under the Moonlight. I wish I could have taken revenge for my mother’s death myself. But things happen.” I said explaining how I felt about that night.
“ Well I guess you may be right. Some things do happen. I do have another question. You said Alpha. How do they determine who is Alpha of a pack?” Dr. Swartz asked.
“Well, there is a true alpha who is meant to be alpha because of his bloodline, but you have to be 18 to be an Alpha. When he turns 18 there is a retual in which he gains control of the pack. That is a very long story so I should tell it next time when I come." That is if I come. So far I wasn't really sure about the whole theripist stuff. I really thought that this whole "vision" thing that was happening because of a physical thing that could be explained by medical reasons. I think that this whole vision thing was not mental but physical.
"Okay, well I will look forward to each of the expliations that you have promised me so far today. Thank you very much for this meeting, the hour that your father paid for you to have is almost up is there anything you would like to say to wrap up this meeting." Dr.Swartz asked just as a breeze came though the open window behind him, that I had been so relieved that I could avoid when I sat down in the office.
I caught the sent on the air that smelled like pine trees and this being the city I knew there were no pine trees around. The ony thng that smelled like pine trees, besides of course pine trees, is werewolves and becuse of how close the smell was it had to be someone in the office and scince it came towards her it had to be the doctor. The one reflex I could always depend on when I didn't trust a person very much at a certin point of time was that my hand went automatically to my gun.
"Yes accually why are you asking me all of these questions if you already know them?"
The doctor tensed "What do you mean?"
" You alrady know everything that I have said because you are a werewolf yourself. Tell me right now why you are asking me these questions or other wise I will start shooting. I know you can smell the bullets. I can shoot up this whole town and still not get in trouble I have that many contections. So tell me now!" I said getting up and getting in a gun stance, her feet spread apart sholder length and her hollister unsnaped and my hand dancing on the gun handle.
"Well really I wanted to see how much you knew because I think I have that opertunity as one of your orginal elders Roxy."
My jaw dropped as a memory came back to me. It was Dr. Swartz standing next to my mother cooing over the new baby in her arms.
"Oh my full moon. Hello Mike. Nice to you agian doc." I said snapping her hollister back in place and relaxing my stance. "I see you finally retired your wolf. How long ago did you do that? You still had your wolf when I was born."
"Not to long ago. Maybe we can talk more tomarrow at your and dad's coming home party. But I have another client." Mike said standing up and holding out his hand. I took his hand and gave him a frim hand shake and walked out of the office.

Yes it is an unusual thing to experience. Is there anything else that is just a little bit like this? Something that could have caused you to say that you can se the past. Because through the tone of your voice it sounded as if you actually believed it but just dismissed the idea.” Dr. Swartz asked me.

I took his hand and gave him a frim hand shake and walked out of the office.

ok so i like ur idea, very interesting take on werewolves.
ok so i took a few notes:
1) u probably don't need to restate the prologue at the beginnnig of ch.1 cuz the reader just read it.
2)u don't need to out right tell the reader that the character has trust issues, we'll understand by her actions, as in "actions speak louder than words"
3) again no need to tell us she'd observant, since could see just a hint of a nod we realize she's observant
4) who's Roxy? or was that just a change in character name that u missed?

I think it's interesting too.
If you don't mind me asking; Why did you decide on werewolves?

when she demands to know to know how Dr. Swartz knows about the werewolves, right at the end.

yeah i like the beginning of the chapter better now. i thought its was interesting how you used the wolf count and why the werewolves are usually males, very intriguing. Its cool that you started out this way cuz u give the background info but not in a dull way. so far i really like it.

Yeah my friend thought it was going to be so hard because I pratically took a mythical creacher and did my own stuff with it. But it was surprisingly easy.

yeah its easy when you see how you want it not how everyone else sees it

Later at home my dad (Ben) and me sat at the kitchen counter talking about the meeting she had with Mike.
“I can’t believe I didn’t recognize him! He was my doctor when I was a baby not to mention the couple time he’s had to come over to Auntie’s house every summer when one of us got hurt! Well actually I never really saw him; I just had a glimpse. Well it’s good that he finally retired his wolf. He delivered grandpa!” I said getting up and looking in the fridge for something to eat.
“Don’t spoil your diner, Roxy. It’s not your fault that you didn’t recognize him at first. Really no one expected you to. The main reason I sent you to him was because he helped me when my mom died. He can really listen to anything. I really thought he might help you. By the way you kind of do know more than most wolves do. I told him these and gave him permission to question you as much as he needed to, regarding this. I see he took me up on that offer. So if you want to blame anyone then blame me! Now what do you want for dinner?” dad said getting up and looking in the freezer we had just stocked today, seeing as how we had just moved into town yesterday.
We moved back into the cottage that we use to live in up until my mother died. My dad still owned so I suggested we move back in. Both of us had accepted my mother’s death as much as we could so I thought that we should move back to our house. Plus most girls try to date within their pack the first couple years and just visiting in the summers just wasn’t doing it for me.
“How about tacos, we haven’t had them in awhile.” I said looking to see if we had picked up shells. Finding them I asked dad “Soft shells or crunchy shells? Your pick,” I picked up the package and the box.
“Hmm… crunchy sounds good. I’ll make the meat and you can chop up all the stuff.” Dad said getting the ground beef out of the freezer.
I went to the fridge and got the lettuce and tomatoes out. I pulled out a knife from the holder and a cutting board from a cabinet under the counter. I started chopping the toppings for the tacos.
“So what exactly are we doing for the party tomorrow? We going to have streamers all around and a welcome back cake. I haven’t heard anything about it besides that you and Jason are planning one!” I said sliding the veggies into two different bowls.
“It’s going to stay that way. This is a surprise party for you. But you know it’s happening. But I will tell you one thing. Only the pack will be there and the entire pack will be there.” Dad said getting a frying pan out for the meat.
“Cool. Actually only part of it was the part about the pack coming not about the surprise party. You know it’s times like these that I start to get aggravated at you.” I said looking to see if we bought sour cream.
“What do you mean times like these? Oh and I am the adult so I can throw you a surprise party whenever I want to.” Dad said mixing the meat around in the pan.
“Surprise parties, I hate them. So what I meant is that I get aggravated when you’re throwing me one. And I know you’re the adult but I’m a teenager so I have permission to be mad at you sometimes. So ha.” I said.
I found the sour cream and set it on the counter and closing the fridge. I got a spoon from the silverware drawer (oh yeah, werewolves aren’t “allergic” to sliver) and set it on top of the sour cream. I went back to the fridge to grab the bag of mixed cheese. “All we are waiting on is the meat to get done and put the flavoring in. How much longer do you think is left?”
“Still some time. Why don’t you do the dishes in the sink, I’ll dry you wash.” Dad said stirring the meat before grabbing a dishrag and towel in a cupboard.
So my dad and me did the dishes with him occasionally stirring the meat. When it was done I set the veggies, shells, and sour cream on the table. When I was about to sit down the doorbell rang. I went to the door and checked in the eyehole. I saw that it was a Ray. I checked in the mirror, which is in the hall, to make sure I looked okay and opened the door.

I got the silberware from the drawer."So when are you going to have the retual for you being alpha?" Dad asked sitting down at the table and making his tacos.
"Umm Ben, I just changed about six months ago. So a long time from now" Ray said sitting down to make his tacos.
I sat down and did the same. "Yeah daddy you are so stupid. All you have to remember is that Ray is seven months older then me." i said taking a bite of one of my tacos.
"You are, aren't you. I keep thinking you are older than that. But yeah you could remember it that way." Ray said.
"Sorry I always think your older. And how old are you again honey?" Dad said with a smile growing on his lips.
"Ha, ha very funny dad. If you ever forget my birthday, and it's not a medical reason, I will personally kill you!" I said a smile growing on my face too. i looked over at Ray and saw that he was trying not to laugh but was so not suceeding. All of us started lauging as if we were one big huge happy family, but in truth we praticaly were.
