DL's theme by theme/youtube inspired 101010 Challenge

I've been planning this out since around January of 2009 (rather pathetic, I know). My hope is to come up with ten catagories each with a corresponding YouTube video link (just click on the picture at the top of each catagory). It continues to be an ongoing project that I hope to have finished by January :-)

Wildfire

Cool! It think this might work...

My first catagory is my "Wildfire" theme. This includes books that feature horses in some way or have horses on the cover.

The picture links to a YouTube video featuring the 1970s song "Wildfire" with some great horse pictures for those interested.

1. Green Rider by Kristen Britain
2. First Rider's Call by Kristen Britain
3. The Mountain's Call by Caitlin Brennan
4. Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey
5. Storm Warning by Mercedes Lackey
6. Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop

My Vampire Heart

1. The Last Vampire by Whitley Striber
2. Immortal Bonds by Dawn Scovill
3. Immortal: Love Stories with Bite an Anthology
5. Night Life by Elizabeth Guest
6. A Girl's Guide to Vampires by Katie MacAlister
7. Darkness Calls by Caridad Peniro

9. 38964::Return to Me by juliatempleton::Julia Templeton

I fell in love with the song "My Vampire Heart" and this YouTube video features my favorite vampire, Fai from the 1259982::Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles manga (pictured). However, I think any vampire fan would like the song which is pretty dark and brooding, like you would expect of any vampire theme song.

Tell Me

This is me looking at my ever increasing tbr pile due to all the great LT recommendations LOL!
(Actually it is "The Scream" by Edvard Munch (1863-1944) for those that don't know)

These are books that have all been recommended by my fellow LTers (with the exception of the one rec from my co-worker). The video is "Tell Me" by j-pop band Wonder Girls. I happened upon this video by accident and thought it was quite amusing and since the "Tell Me" theme worked for this catagory here we are.

1. A Business of Ferrets by Beth Hilgartner
2. The Prisoner by Cheryl Reavis
3. Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
5. Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

Here's my "What’s Your Name?" theme catagory featuring books that have names in the titles. What a great selection of category themes and then the books within the categories! While there is not much overlap between our 2010 categories, you have chosen a lot of books I am interested in. I feel a surge in my wishlist coming on. I will be back.

I Want It All

I've been going back and forth on what catagory I wanted as my last. I couldn't decide between young adult, romance or something maybe more far fetched (and yes, I had vids picked out for all of them *sigh*) So, I'm going with the "I Want It All" theme so I can just add a smorgasboard of stuff. The video is a rather bizarre Potter Puppet Pals cartoon done to Queen's "I Want It All". Who'd've thunk it.

1. Meridian by Amber Kizer (ya)
2. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen (fiction/fantasy)
3. Wilderness Tips by Margaret Atwood (anthology - for April, 2010)
4. American Gods by Neil Gaiman (fiction/fantasy)
5. Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee (ya)
6. Married by Mistake by Abby Gaines (romance)
7. Make It So by Wess Roberts (self-help/Star Trek)
8. No Regrets by Shannon Butcher (suspense)
9. The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys by Chris Fuhrman (fiction)
10. A Density of Souls by Christopher Rice (contemporary fiction)

Wow, DL, seriously, you must have a lot of spare time on your hands-- and a great deal of creativity! LOL. I love your whole themed youtube inspired challenge. ;)

There's quiet a few on your list that I've either read or plan on reading.

I'll have to get to work on my list for this challenge soon, but I'll probably end up putting it off until the last part of December.

Enjoy!

TBQ - My son slept over at my parent's Tuesday night and since we have no air conditioning in the middle of a heat wave I was quite content to sit in front of my computer from the time I got home from work and play until 11:00 p.m. (I just had a hard time getting up the next morning!) So, not so much general spare time as ample opportunity :-)

Also, lots of pre-planning went in to this as well LOL!

Aug 19, 2009, 4:09 pm

I agree, that the planning is the most fun! Well, I hope that the books are fun too, but sometimes they are disappointing. But there's something satisfying about drawing up those lists and marking things off!

17RidgewayGirl
Aug 19, 2009, 5:38 pm

Oh, if we didn't like lists, we wouldn't be members of LT, would we? Most people would not consider making lists of books a really good time. My comfort is that there are so many of us!

18lindapanzo
Aug 19, 2009, 5:52 pm

I am actually not a listmaker at all. I'm really spontaneous but decided that maybe a little bit of planning ahead would be good for my reading. Last year and in all previous years, when I finished one book, I'd look around and say "hmmm, what should I read next?"

I do agree that the listmaking part of the 999 was probably one of the best parts.

Aug 19, 2009, 6:21 pm

Hi DL,

Weren't you gonna use Duran Duran's Wild Boys for the fantasy category? Anyways, you've got quite a creative streak. :) I like the song "My Vampire Heart" video too, though I'm not a vampire fan.

I'd recommend Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea for "Water Logged", if you haven't read it already.

20Jenson_AKA_DL
Aug 20, 2009, 7:30 am

I never really thought of myself as a listmkaker until I joined LT. It really is nice to know that I'm not alone in my enjoyment. I told my co-worker and family about what I've been doing and they all think I'm totally nuts!

booksontrial - That's a good idea! I read the "youth" edition when I was a youth, but haven't read the original work. I'm glad you liked the song, I was wondering if anybody would check out the videos I picked.

Aug 20, 2009, 7:48 am

@#20 I've been keeping a reader's diary with lots of geeky statistics for alomst thirteen years already, so the list part in itself was not new to me. Planning next year's reading ahead however, was a concept I found strange and a little offputting. Until I realised it was actually a way to commit to bring down my massive TBR pile a bit. And that, in not deciding a reading order, there's still a whole lot of freedom left (well, maybe not at the end of the year).

I'm lucky enough to be married to antoher booklover, who actually enjoys discussing selections with me as I roam our halls, eyes fixed on the bookshelves...

Very cool categories, and a lot of titles unknown to me, DL! I think this might be the first time I see something tagged "Star Trek/Self help" :)

A wonderful themed list, DL. Congratulations on putting it together so well.

>19 booksontrial: I had thought to use the "Wild Boys" video along with "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" for a young adult catagory, which I wound up nixing. It really would have worked for fantasy as well, considering the video itself is very fantasy like. It's kind of sad because the video is really great, but I wanted something that incorporated both sci-fi and fantasy.

>21 GingerbreadMan: It's so great you have a significant other who enjoys books! My husband rarely reads anything except the occasional newspaper or magazine article. I discovered the Make it So book here on LT. Another member was either talking about the book in a thread or had it on their challenge list. I was intrigued by the premise as well :-)

>22 AHS-Wolfy: Thanks!

GingerbreadMan, earlier I said I wasn't a listmaker and it's true. I don't keep lists of what I plan to read.

However, what began as a high school English class project in 1976 continues to this day--I've kept track of every book I've read since then, almost 3,000 of them.

Funny but I never thought of it as keeping a list. More like keeping a history.

25arubabookwoman
Aug 20, 2009, 9:07 pm

Hey linda--I've been keeping a list of the books I've read for a long time too--since 1977. Haven't counted how many books though. Mine is a handwritten list, and the earlier pages are getting quite crumbly by now.

26lindapanzo
Aug 20, 2009, 9:17 pm

arubabookwoman, I started on index cards. Then I moved them to small bound books. I never really added them up til, in a burst of energy when I first joined LT last winter, I inputted them all here.

I'm at 2,915 books read. (Plus 62 "to reads" which don't count). I ought to wildly celebrate when I reach 3,000 early next year!!

27cmbohn
Aug 20, 2009, 11:03 pm

I have around 3600 listed on Good Reads, which is where I'm tracking all my books. But I'm sure there's a bunch I don't remember.

Aug 23, 2009, 9:48 am

Looks like a really interesting year of reading! I love your pictures and the video idea.. I'll definitely be back to see how you are doing..

I haven't started a thread as yet but I will probably continue on with at least some of my 999 categories and I'm pretty sure some of your authors will turn up in my list as well.

29Jenson_AKA_DL
Aug 23, 2009, 2:07 pm

Thanks!

I was trying for a relatively diverse selection of books that I really want to read. I realized after the fact with my 999 challenge that in trying to fit nine books into a catagory, even though they are books I picked and own for myself, that when it comes down to it, there are a lot I don't really want to read. I made an effort to avoid having that happen again this year.

Aug 23, 2009, 2:27 pm

message 9, number 10 might want to add the newest release Darkest Whisper, it was just released (August 2009) and is Sabin (Doubt)'s story. I know I am adding it to my list - I just don't think it will make it till 2010.

31VirginiaGill
Aug 24, 2009, 11:31 pm

I've read a number of the books you have on your lists...you are going to have such a fun reading year! I'm copying down all the Dragon books so I can scope them out for myself and my friend Deena. Thanks!

32Jenson_AKA_DL
Edited: Sep 6, 2009, 11:19 am

onyx - That's a good idea, I didn't realize that another one was out. I thought it was going to be a trilogy. My original idea was to see if I caught up on Sherrilyn Kenyon's books and if I couldn't do it by the end of this year, to add either One Silent Night or Bad Moon Rising to the list depending on what I got to. If I totally catch up Darkest Whisper will definitely to on the list!

Virginia - Thanks for the feedback, I'm really looking forward to starting on this challenge! I hope you find a dragon book you like :-)

So, since I didn't get Shiver from Early Reviewers this month (big surprise, I haven't gotten anything in months) I guess that means my catagories are pretty much filled with the exception of my last "series" book to be filled in at the end of the year.

Everybody I know pretty much thinks I'm crazy for pre-planning next year's reading. It is nice to see I'm not the only one here doing it :-) I'm really looking forward to it though and am already thinking about what my "first" book of 2010 will be.

Kushiel's Dart and The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit are two of my favorite books! I hope that you enjoy them. (:

I've already filled out all of my lists, too. When I told my friends about it, they just smiled and shook their heads. My boyfriend was more surprised about the number of books that I plan to read. He kept repeating, "That's like two books a week!" But, for the most part, I think they've grown accustomed to my quirky reading habits. Haha!

I'm still tweaking my lists and have made some substitutions. Since I just took Shiver out from the library (the good reviews made me too curious to wait until next year) I've replaced it with what looks like a story set in winter, Scarlet and the White Wolf which I know I'm getting for Christmas.

His Majesty's Dragon which I had intended to take out from the library and was in my "Water Logged" post has been replaced by In Great Waters which I recently mooched and am really looking forward to.

I'm not really going very fast on my lists *sigh* but I am making a little progress. Last night I finished Changing Fate, a fantasy by LT Author Elisabeth Waters. It was much better than I expected.

I'm now onto The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time which is in my "Tell Me" catagory and also picked for me to read over on the Go Review That Book! group. I'm not so sure I'll like this one as it's not my usual reading fare but I'm giving it a shot. I had heard so much about it here on LT I couldn't resist picking it up at the Salvation Army for a half dollar when I saw it.

42thornton37814
Mar 2, 2010, 10:49 am

>41 Jenson_AKA_DL: I read it when it first came out. It was (at that time) not something I would have typically picked up to read, but the title caught my attention when I ordered it for our library's leisure reading collection, and I just had to check it out since the reviews I'd seen were so glowing. I enjoyed it very much.

I've done a little switching around in my catagories. I've put in a couple that I've already read that fit the catagories above and created a little more overlap with a couple of my other challenges. I'm feeling that I've bit off a little more than I can chew with all the different lists....

BTW - I am enjoying The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time a lot more than I thought I would. I hope to have it finished off by tomorrow.

Although I have no expectation of actually completing my challenge this year due to a huge upheavel in my personal life, it is still nice to be able to check some off my list. I just recently finished The Hunger Games from my "Tell Me" catagory and it was very enjoyable.

I may still get through a couple more before year's end :-)
