In my work, I travel to many high schools and universites around the world. I always include this book as one of the semenal books for understanding globalization.
What do you all think about Jared Diamond's book?
Do you think it offers something to the globalization discussion? If so what?

I have listened to a couple of interviews of Jared Diamond on NPR and I read a few reviews of Guns Germs and Steel when it came out but this is one of the books that I have always wanted to read but have not yet had a chance to. I really need to go buy this book. I am curious why you think it is one of the semenal books on globalization?

Jared Diamonds theories on why the world developed the way it did and why certain cultures or peoples migrated the way they did helped me understand some basic priniciples behind the globalizing world.
I usually attributed conquest and expansion only to psychological or sociological determinents: greed, power, racism...but Jared introduces many of the "natural" (meaning from nature - biology, physics) reasons why history may have unfolded the way it did.
I hope this very short and wholy insufficient resonse at least gives you an idea.
Aslo keep in mind that my definition of Globalilzation goes well past the current focus on global capital.
