Add Meriwether Lewis to your list, greatest of all American explorers according to Ambrose, and in the top rank of world explorers. One might want to quibble with Jefferson that Lewis was "of undaunted courage." Clearly at times he was daunted.
There are gaps in the journals of Lewis and Clark, some as long as a year, which no one has explained. Ambrose speculates minimally, preferring to hold out hope that the gaps suggest missing sections which some day will be found by scholars. I have my doubts. It seems more likely that the gaps were periods during which Lewis didn't write, didn't do much of anything at all except survive.
