How new, LorLe? I've just started reading Peter Matthiessen's voluminous tome, Shadow Country, a compilated revision of his 3 earlier books about Killing Mister Watson set in the Thousand Islands at the turn of the last century -- it's a brilliant picture of old Florida.

Well, new or good....looking for suggestions to fill a holiday weekend.

I agree with with janeajones about Shadow Country. It depends if you want historical perspective or something set in modern Florida. Orange Crush or other books by Tim Dorsey and Skinny Dip by Hiaasen make fun of Florida of today.

lerle -- we are way past the holiday weekend into a new year, but -- jeez -- there are a passel of books on/about florida i've come across in our area libraries. a history of coral gables is this century, and carl haaison (sp) always puts out a new one every year, as does his imitator from tampa, tim dorsey. there's a little known writer who mostly writes for children and youing adults named jeff lambert, florida handbooks, water management books on their districts, harry crews, and, of course, me -- a candle in the rain (1990) and zephrs (2007) come on back and we'll name another 10 or so.

Swamplandia! by Karen Russell -- quite a ride through the Everglades and into a theme park named Dark World. Highly recommended.

I set a lot of my books in Florida (I live here). The most recent is the Crossroads Crisis Center Series. Deadly Ties.

Starting a new series now that will also be set in Florida. (I live here and like it here. )
