I've heard it said that graphic designers need to have a very good understanding of limits and possibilities of physical printing techniques. I was reminded of this when I watched your Authors@Google video and saw the cover of Cormac McCarthy's The Road (which had the author's name in shiny black on matte black background), which wouldn't have made any sense on a computer screen.

How have you acquired your knowledge of printing techniques? Do you call a particular printer when you have a question? Do you look around at what's been done to see what works and what doesn't? Do you pitch ideas that turn out to be unworkable / overly expensive and learn from what gets shot down?
