Many years ago, I hired a professional photographer for a private event, and an author (who is a friend) was photographed. He was a major part of the event, so I'm positive he knows he was photographed.
I have legal right to use the photographs and own the negatives. Is it acceptable to post the photo? The photographer has since retired, so I can attribute the photo, but there is no website, etc.

Since you hold the rights, sure--you can post it. Be sure to mention that you hold the rights and give permission for its use on LT in the "justification" section.
