Those interested in broadening their ACW knowledge by extending out west of the Mississippi now have a sturdy, well-written trilogy as a good foundation to work with. Wilson's Creek: The Second Battle of the Civil War and the Men Who Fought It captures the "Bull Run of the West." Next, William Shea covers the Pea Ridge campaign and the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern in Pea Ridge: Civil War Campaign in the West. Shea has just published a wrap-up volume (which I just finished), Fields of Blood: The Prairie Grove Campaign. Albert Castel's study of a major protagonist on the Confederate side is still very useful, General Sterling Price and the Civil War in the West. Those interested in the unfortunate Mississippi general can turn to, Van Dorn: The Life and Times of a Confederate General. (a fine example of the Peter principle at work). For a staff officer's view try, The fight for Missouri: From the election of Lincoln to the death of Lyon . An excellent regimental memoir can be found in Tunnard's A Southern Record: The History of the Third Regiment Louisiana Infantry. Finally a couple of recommended novels: ELKHORN TAVERN. and the excellent Woe to Live On (made into Ride With the Devil by Ang Lee, starring Tobey Maguire & Jewel).

This is a rather Confederate-centriclist but I'm sure some folks out there can share info on the Northern side of affairs. Cheers, A
