I'm looking for recommendations of collections of traditional Japanese myths, legends, and tales in English. The bigger (well, the more comprehensive) the better. Thanks!

Were it tales alone, I would recommend Royall Tyler ed./trans.: Japanese Tales, with the caveat to expect some pretty gross ones.

For elegant myths and legends, you ought to go for anything by Lafcadio Hearn. He does not have all in one comprehensive book, anything he wrote was interesting.

An Invitation to Kagura: Hidden Gem of the Traditional Japanese Performing Arts deals with a number of myths and legends from the perspective of folk theater.
