Here is where we will join in for the group read.

We officially start on January 1st, 2010.

I'll pos the discussion questions toward the end of the month.

Welcome everyone!

Do you actually want people to sign up? If so, this is mine. If not, I can come back later and delete.

NST - you are in since you said so in message 2.. No real signup just a place to say that you want to join in on the read. Sorry for the confusion.

Count me in. I may or may not have a copy of this book--I have to check. Looking forward to it.

You can count me in too. I think I own a copy of the book. I've always meant to read the book and now is my chance.

I read this years ago, and still have my paperback edition. I think it's time to read it again! I really enjoyed it the first time around.

There's a message on the group page that says the group has been flagged. What's that about? I didn't even know you could flag a whole group. And who would object to a group read of a classic novel??

Dec 13, 2009, 1:29 am

I'm in! Another book I've owned for awhile and just haven't gotten around to reading.

>8 tymfos: - I went to the group page and you're right and my little mind is boggled. I might think someone new to LT actually wanted to star it and did this instead, but I looked for where to set a flag and did not find it. Hard to do something by accident that is hard to find. I am sure the "highly paid LT staff" will sort it out.

I think I'll join in on this... I started reading Dorian Gray several years ago but for some reason never finished it (and I was enjoying it, too!). What a great motivator to "git 'er done"!

I see these question threads have been set up . . . how is this going to work, anyway? Looks very different from the few other group reads I've done. Already a question posted about the final scene, and we haven't even started.

14Eat_Read_Knit
Dec 23, 2009, 4:12 pm

I'll join in: this had been on my shelf for about five years waiting for me to get around to it. Now I just have to remember which shelf I left it on...

15cyderry
Dec 26, 2009, 11:51 pm

The questions can be answered after you read the entire book or as you go along. The thread title gives some hint of what the question is about so that the reader can get make a determination of whether they are to that point or not. Some readers like the questions beforehand so that they can think more as they go along about how they want to answer.

Some of the other group reads just say "be at this point by this date" but have no questions.

If the group has other questions, as they go along, a new thread can be added.

I will join in this group read. I believe my son has this book since he was taking British Literature. If not I will buy the book. I will check tonight to see if my son has the book and take it as mine now.

I haven't done an LT group read before but I like the idea of having posted questions. I haven't looked carefully yet but no spoilers, I hope.

19cyderry
Edited: Dec 29, 2009, 4:38 pm

No Spoilers, because I haven't read t yet, either.

I borrowed a Cliff Notes from the library and used the discussion questions from it. When I read the questions, they seemed not too specific in detail but thought provoking enough to get the discussion started.

If anyone has other questions, as we go along, feel free to add them.

Hello, I'm in. I just got the book last year, but this is one of those classics I've meant to read for ages.

My son does have the book but he doesn't know where it is. I will look for it this weekend and hopefully find it so I can join in the group read.

Dec 31, 2009, 9:37 am

What time frame are we looking at for reading this? The other group reading I'm starting in January has decided on 50 pages a week. Is that okay or did we want to read more p/w?

23cyderry
Jan 1, 2010, 9:30 am

I'm thinking 3 chapters a week (everyone's copy can be different on pages) but counting the introduction and preface that's twelve so four weeks - so by the end of January, we'll be finished. Does that sound good to everyone?

Of course, if you want to read ahead that's okay, just no spoilers in the threads.

24tymfos
Edited: Jan 1, 2010, 10:32 am

#23 Sounds fine! I read up to the end of Chapter 2 this morning, so that should be an easy pace to maintain or even get a little ahead and still have plenty of time for other books. (I'm always careful about spoilers.)

My copy didn't have an Introduction, though . . . just Wilde's preface.

ETA to add

(looking back at my copy) Do different editions have different chapter numbering? I have the Magnum Easy Eye edition, marked complete and unabridged, and the last chapter is XX (20) . . .maybe my edition divided the chapters in half, given the number of chapters suggested by your post. ???

25lindapanzo
Jan 1, 2010, 11:02 am

Three chapters a week sounds good. I'm reading on my Kindle and will probably get started today or tomorrow.

I have to buy a new book since my old one is missing a few pages...

I'm in! But: as an English major, I have a heavy reading load... so... I will be reading it, but perhaps not 3 chapters a week. We'll see though. Happy New Year!

I read the preface late last night before going to be. I am reading this book along with my book club book for January and I need to finish that book by the 2nd or 3rd week of January. This is my first group read on here and I am looking forward to it.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Jan 2, 2010, 3:30 pm

I'm in... got the book on Dec 31, and I'm currently nearly 1/2 through it. I didn't know until I got to this group today that it was for the whole month of January -- I thought we were supposed to read the entire book during the first week of January!

I read Dorian Gray many years ago, and liked it. But what I'm finding so far is that I'm seeing very different things in it than I did when I was somewhere +/- 20. The mark of good literature, I think... and doesn't Harry say something to that effect early in the book?

Jan 2, 2010, 7:12 pm

I am not doing the 1010 challenge (as I had trouble finishing the 999 one), but would like to read the book and join this group. OK?

FYI: I just downloaded the audio version of the book from Librivox:
http://librivox.org/the-picture-of-dorian-gray-by-oscar-wilde/

I will most likely listen to it, while taking my daughter for strolls in her stroller.

Over the weekend I started reading an old Signet Classic paperback copy of mine of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Other Writings. So far I think I'm on Chapter 3 of the book and will probably finish before the end of the month.

I've read a little bit more and am now in Chapter 5 page 78 of the book.

K, I know I'm a little ahead of the set goals. . . since I finished it already. I, like ivyd, thought we were going to read it all pretty quick, not the entire month. Ah well, I will do my utter best at not typing spoilers, and follow where most people are when discussing the questions.

43cyderry
Jan 5, 2010, 8:10 pm

I'm hoping to get mine done before the end of the week but I didn't want to rush anybody. Most group reads take a few weeks, but no one has a gun aimed at us to prevent anyone from going on.

Hi all

finished mine in a couple of days (a 3+ hour plane journey helped) so will have a crack at the questions soon....

45crazy4reading
Jan 6, 2010, 8:29 am

Good job psutto, katelisim on finishing early. I figure I can finish early too if I didn't have another book to be done by the 20th. If I can finish that book in the next week or so I will be able to finish Dorian Gray early.

46hopeglidden
Jan 6, 2010, 8:06 pm

I will admit to getting caught up in the story. I finished the book a few minutes ago. I need to ponder the questions for a day or two before I begin posting my responses though.

47tymfos
Jan 6, 2010, 8:34 pm

Well, as I posted on my own 75 challenge thread, I have multiple "must reads" this month, (an ILL due back the 20th, a book discussion read for the 21st, and an ARC I want to finish & review ASAP) so I am juggling . . . but I am finished chapter 5.

48cyderry
Jan 6, 2010, 10:40 pm

I finished through chapter 12 today. I just couldn't stop until I absolutely had to.

49lindapanzo
Jan 7, 2010, 11:56 am

Sigh. I am just not getting into this book at all. How far do I have to go before it becomes so gripping?

I don't read a lot of nonmystery fiction and the beginning of this book reminds me why.

I may spend another 30 to 60 minutes reading it tonight and, if it doesn't improve for me, I may throw in the towel on this one.

50NeverStopTrying
Jan 7, 2010, 12:38 pm

I have a number of "must" reads this month also, so I got Dorian Gray out of the way early. I had avoided reading it earlier in life because I knew the basic storyline and did not think I would enjoy it. But I am doing a slow and steady 1001 challenge, so I signed up for the Group Read. The edition I read now is a Penguin with a good Introduction and Notes, which helped me understand the lifestyle and ethical issues in terms of the times and in terms of OW's life. So I found it interesting and am glad I read it.

I am in. I haven't read this one for a long time and I have just fallen in love with L.T.'s group reads for 2010. There are fourteen of them in January alone. They may be all I have time for. I'm excited to be here. Thanx for setting this up. ***waves to all***

I finished the book (the first edition with only 13 chapters) and wrote a little review too. But I find myself short on time, so I won't be able to participate in the conversation itself.

Thank you for creating this group that prompted me to read the book. I hope your discussion will be fruitful and enriching.
