I've added the concept of "dormant groups." Dormant groups are public groups that haven't had a post in the last 12 months. I consider that a pretty generous definition of dormancy.
Because LibraryThing has been around for more than four years, and especially because early on it was harder to find groups and easy to create them, and adding most spam groups, over 4,078 groups have been made "dormant." 3,893 groups are not dormant. Creative destruction at work...
Groups stop being dormant when someone posts to them.
Dormant groups look like this: http://www.librarything.com/groups/benningtonmfa (PLEASE don't post to it.)
Dormant groups are hidden by default when you do searches and group tags. But you can show them. See the bottom of this page: http://www.librarything.com/groups/tag/history
Other sections, like local groups and language groups hide dormant groups.
In general, I want to make it possible to search for, find and revive dormant groups. But I don't want people to feel they have to do so, if they want to start their own group--which can be the healthier option.

Fair enough! It's weird that groups without any activity for a year have group tags, but that's cool.

I probably added them :)

I thought at one time you could search the libraries of group members, there was also a total size for the libraries of the group.
I now can't find these features.
In the days before collections I had two accounts and a linking group so that I could search through both. Since the group does not have a discussion forum it is by your definition inactive and therefore dormant.
do groups now only exist for the purpose of postings?

I think it would be useful to at least optionally be able to see dormant Local groups. If enough people see that there is a group close to them it may become undormant.

Could you add a Complete List of only active groups, and also a Complete List of only dormant groups? When I go to All Groups, I'd actually prefer not to see the dormant ones at first, even though that wouldn't technically be All Groups anymore.

RE: _Zoe_'s question
Could you, perhaps, add "(dormant") after a dormant group in the Your Group list, similar to the "(watching)" note?
