I finished this book a few days ago and did not want to spoil it for anybody about to read it but since I will be away for a month, I thought I would go ahead and post my thoughts.
I really disliked this book and found myself getting aggrevated while reading it.
What did you think of the plot? "New and fresh", "tried and true", or "oh, no, not another..."
There was a plot? Perhaps I missed it. The book lumbered on through one betrayal after another, and all of it was really pointless.
What do you think are the books strengths and weaknesses?
Not too many strengths come to mind. Weaknesses were legion. First of all, it was historically inaccurate and glaringly so. At some point, a traitor was about to be executed and someone in the crowd throws a tomato at him. This time period was supposed to be somewhere around 200 to 400 AD (since the Romans were still in control of Brittain). Tomatoes were not introduced in Europe until the 15th century when the Spaniards brought them back from South America. At another point, the heroine is wearing satin -- introduced to Europe from China sometime in the 12th or 13th century. I could go on. Generally, I am not so picky but the story annoyed me so much that I could not let this kind of stuff go. Another weakness was the lack of insight of any of the characters. The heroine was supposed to be an intelligent girl but she kept getting hoodwinked by everyone and was really dumb about a lot of things. Same goes for the hero, who started out OK but then rapes the heroine who says that's ok, I love you anyway. Then he makes her a slave, then his whore, then decides to marry her. On their wedding day, the heroine's brother kills the only decent character in the book -- who was the heroine's best friend -- and right away, the hero decides she did it and throws in the a dungeon. It just goes on and on. It was just too much!!
Who are your favorite and least favorite characters in the book, and why?
The only character I liked was the jester. I guess I liked him because he was the only one who possessed a modicum of common sense.
Do you have a favorite scene or line of dialog?
Early on in the story, when the Conn finds out Gelina is a girl and she tries in every way to kill him, he takes tender care of her. When they get to Tara, he does not reveal her identity as the person who killed all his soldiers and simply asks for her allegience.
How do you think the book could have been better?
The premise was good, but the book lacked focus. The characters never learned to trust each other. It would have been better if at some point they communicated, got some insight, grew to trust each other.
What do you think of the author's writing style, and as a result of reading this book, will you look for other of her books?
Fortunately, I have read other books by Teresa Medeiros and have really loved them. I am assuming this was an early work. If this were the only book of hers that I had read, I would not read another.
For those familiar with author, do you think this book compares favorably?
No.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I gave this book a 2 -- and that's being generous!!

oh no, I have just received my copy and hope to start within a week. hmm, maybe I shouldn't have read your thoughts first mamalaz. I think I will give it a try anyways. I will be back to let you know if I agree or not.

What did you think of the plot? "New and fresh", "tried and true", or "oh, no, not another..."
I would put it in the "tried and true" catagory. I have never read a romance set in the 2nd century but otherwise it followed regular medieval lines.
What do you think are the books strengths and weaknesses?
LOL, I didn't mind the historical inaccuracies. I didn't even stick out to me. Though I have to say a little less misunderstandings would have been great.
Who are your favorite and least favorite characters in the book, and why?All in all I liked Conn, Nimbus an Mer-Nod
Do you have a favorite scene or line of dialog?
I liked the little scenes between Nimbus and Mer-Nod, there was clearly affection in their bantering.
How do you think the book could have been better?
Less misunderstandings.
What do you think of the author's writing style, and as a result of reading this book, will you look for other of her books?
LOL, I have most of her books in my tbr so yes, I will read more.
For those familiar with author, do you think this book compares favorably? It was my first, so no idea.

I got so busy last month, I didn't even finish this one. I don't know. I guess it would depend on the book that we picked.
7Jenson_AKA_DL
Ditto on the "I guess it would depend on the book that we picked."

I think maybe we'd do better with these group reads if we picked books that are in print and currently in stores/being reviewed/featured online.
There are quite a few popular authors with new books or rereleases out right now (Connie Brockway, Laura Kinsale, Mary Balogh, Nalini Singh, Jennifer Crusie, Kristan Higgins, Victoria Dahl, etc.). We could also pick a book from recent best of 2009 lists, like AAR's recent Reviewer's Choice list Virtually all of the books on this list should still be available in stores or from standard online booksellers.
My own tastes point me towards reading the Kinsale (which I already own), the Crusie rerelease The Cinderella Deal, Kristan Higgin's new book or a book released last year that I've been wanting to read: The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie.

Just thought of another one I'd really like to read: The Other Mr Darcy.

I just read my first Nalini Singh, so I am not ready for the new one, but I might be able to get into something like a Jennifer Crusie, more fun and not so serious. I have enough serious running around me right now.

What if we just said to read a book with a red cover, a picture of a heart or the word heart in the title/author. Sort of like we did for December, instead of a winter theme, use the valentine theme.
That way we can all pick our own genre/type of book to read and just share what we get here.
Just an idea.

Oh! I like that. I have a perfect book that fits that criteria. What does everyone else think?

Sure! Hearts and flowers and Valentines all sound good to me and red is my favorite color! ;-)
