I've been away for a few months and in that time a lot of new bird books have appeared! One that I was particularly impressed by was Ridgely & Tudor's Field Guide to the Songbirds of South America: The Passerines, which I got chance to test in the field in Guyana. It's a concise, revised edition of their older two volume work on South American passerines. This version fits into a small backpack and can be used in the field, though it's probably better suited to consultation back at camp. Wonderful plates and a sharp, succinct text - essential!
