I'm tickled to be the first to welcome you here since I've been enjoying the welcomes too! I think that we picked a good group, you and I!
Welcome to LT! It's great!! Whatever you're looking for in a book community is here!!!
AND I wouldn't characterize anybody who's reading Coelho and Boyle and Austen and a bio of Einstein as predominantly a fluff reader! Besides, I read what I want, enjoy it, and defy a supercillious snob to pass judgment. So there.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm debating my next read as I head off to bed. I'm thinking another Maisie Dobbs that I loaded on my Nook today.

Welcome to the group!
I love Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy. I hope you enjoyed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

No problem with fluff here :) Love your name -- one of our cats was a Maine Coon (he died in December). I'm still finding his hair! Can I be 'PetHairMagnetII'? :)

When I have on dark clothing in the winter, people I've just met look at me and say, "And what kind of pet do you have?"

Nowt wrong with a bit of fluff though I don't see much on your reading list so far. I'm currently reading an Emily Barr novel myself.

Welcome! What did you think of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? I've seen it on people's lists quite a bit and have been thinking about adding it to my TBR pile.

>8 sibylline: LOL
I was showing off our Maine Coon at a party, demonstrating how unflappable he was. When I was done they were more impressed with my new fur pants than the cat!

I wrote you something on the intro page -- should have put it here.
How was (feels like it should be were!) The Women?

I loved GwtDT! Can't wait to move onto the second book. A fellow dance parent was rubbing in the fact that he picked up the third book (in paperback!) in Scotland earlier this month.
The Women was awesome and it motivated me to read The Fountainhead which allegedly has a character in it based on FL Wright. The one thing that did bother me about The Women was that the chronological order of FLW's life was reversed.

I would have to say for certain TGwtDT and The Fountainhead are my favorites so far this year.
I read my Jane collection every year so they are also perennial favorites!

ETA Just took a look at your library... what is the 'Jane collection' you mentioned?

Suslyn, I have all of Jane Austen's books. They get re-read every year.
I just finished book #13 today: An Incomplete RevengeJacqueline Winspear Either I'm getting better at figuring out mysteries or else I've figured out Jacqueline Winspear. I think I had this one wrapped up in my mind less than half-way through. I also see how some folks get turned off by the author's need to be so descriptive about the appearance of the people Maisie Dobbs meets and even me, a history major and fiend, could live without some of the details added just to prove the research has been done. It reminds me of Diane Gabaldon who beats the reader over the head with lessons on Colonial American hygiene, herbology and bodily functions.

Didn't she tho? (gabaldon) I found the later ones in the series preferable to the first few despite the head bashing :)
I figured it was Austen, but thought I'd verify. Thx! Roni has a fun custom which I've adopted. She re-reads her Christmas collections (regency short stories and such) every year. Generally I find short stories just too short :) But that format works really well for me in the busy holiday season.

I'm reading the Gabaldon book that is right before the Revolutionary War... The first day took up over 150 pages and nothing really happened. But, yet, I will slog through and probably read more of the series because I'm stupid that way.
I am also not a huge fan of short stories but sometimes they really are just the ticket.

Just found you and wanted to say hi! Welcome to the group and thanks for visiting my thread. Looks like you've read some great books already this year.
I'm halfway through the Gabaldon books but might stay stuck at halfway. I think I'm in the middle of the one in America but it's been 18 months, and I left that book in a box in New Zealand!

#21: If you are referring to The Fiery Cross it is decidedly the weakest of Gabaldon's books, IMHO.

Hi Mic,
Just bopping over to say hello. I promise (really) not to hijack your thread the way I've doing to LizzyD!

How did I get to be this age without reading Jane Eyre? I think it is good that I did wait until I "grew up" to read it, however. I don't believe I need to review this book for this well-read crowd, but I will say that I did enjoy it and am glad I finally have added this to my "read" list.
27LizzieD
Hey, Mic! I am a true fan of *tGwtDT* too but am waiting a bit before I start playing with fire. I'm depressed to hear that Fiery Cross is weak because that's where I am with Gabaldon although I haven't started it. Will the fact that I'm in love with Jamie carry me through? (Hijack away, Becky!)

Jasper Fforde did the Thursday Next series of books with Jane playing an important part in the first, The Eyre Affair.
Also, just to be evil, I saw Jane Slayre in Borders the other day. No idea if it's any good...

Lizzie, I just got your joke in #27... ::face palm::
Just blew through True Colorsby Kristin Hannah today. Hope my parents aren't expecting my house to be clean when they get here tomorrow. :/
This was, obviously, a quick read. This is the story of the Grey sisters starting the day after their mom's funeral in 1979 up to 2008. Family is the all important thing to the Greys. Too bad they can't even say they put the fun in dysfunctional. These people are a mess from the top down. That being said, I kind of liked the overall story and the pace of it. The saving grace for me was the introduction of the voice of the teen age son of the youngest sister. I'm not sure I would say run out and buy it, but if it in your TBR pile go ahead and give it a shot.

#16 finished! I received my pre-order Ebook of The Man Who Loves Pride and Prejudice yesterday. I must warn you, this is Chick Lit, but pretty well-written CL.
This is the story of a marine biologist who meets a very Darcy-like scion of a well-known American family filled with political movers and shakers. The story unfolds much like the story of PandP but is not just a retelling of Jane's work. I found the writing to be smart and the pace of the storytelling was just right. The main protagonists were both very likable characters and the conniving relatives were just nasty enough to be believable.
If you are looking for a good vacation read or one for a nice rainy day at home, I recommend picking up The Man Who Loves Pride and Prejudice.

Almost forgot! I scored 2 hardbacks today for $4.99 each which is about half of the cost of ebooks now that the new pricing structure is in effect. I grabbed Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier and The Inner Circle by T.C. Boyle to add to the pile.
34LizzieD
Lucky you!!!!! ---especially the T.C. Boyle. I really need to read more of him, and I must say that The Man who Loved Pride and Prejudice sounds good too....... Too many books!!!
35alcottacre
Congratulations on those hardbacks! $4.99 each is a great price.
The Man Who Loved Pride and Prejudice is one I will see if I can find. Thanks for the recommendation.

The Inner Circle is not my absolute favorite, but with Boyle, that hardly matters as the characters and subject matter are always riveting. I mean, I got all interested in the history of breakfast cereal for heaven's sake, reading the one set at the sanatorium or whatever...
The Pride and Prejudice sounds like perfect fun.
