John 10:22-30

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."

Jesus answered, "I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one."

My reading of the chronology is that Jesus is in Jerusalem for the third time, having been in Jerusalem since Tabernacles in 7.10.

Previous trips to Jerusalem were the Passover and Temple cleansing in 2.13, and Tabernacles in 5.1.

The feasts in 5.1 and 7.10 are not presented as the same although there are no other feasts between the two.

Perhaps the feast in 5.1 is Weeks rather than Tabernacles.

As always, the problem with the multiple trips to Jerusalem in GJohn and the single trip in the synoptics.

I would love to hear what others think of the textual question in 10:29.

There are several versions that treat the relative pronoun as masculine or neuter and the comparative adjective as masculine or neuter.

Is the Father greater than all things or what the Father has given?

My Father - what he has given to me is greater than all things, and no one is able to seize from the hand of my Father.

My Father who has given to me is greater than all things and no one is able to seize from the hand of my Father.

This brief passage touches on several gospel themes - sheep, listen/hear, follow Jesus, leaders questioning about Jesus as Messiah, the relation of Jesus as son and God as father.
