this topic should read "favorite performances". Sorry about the typo. I don't know how to fix it.I've been wondering if anyone would like to discuss their favorite performances of operas that have been recorded a lot. i've listened to many carmens, and I loved leontyne price and franco corelli especially the death scene. I thought victoria de los angeles was the most sensitive and thoughtful, and I liked the acting of agnes baltsa best. Jesse norman and maria callas were the most dramatic but at the end of the day I vote for Price with Theresa Berganza second.

As far as recordings are concerned, there's nothing like the Callas/Gobbi/diStefano Tosca. For live performances, however, Natalie Dessay's Lucia di Lammermoor stands out in my 30 years of opera-going. (My take on it is here.)
