Just finished an excllent new book on the development of the Hoover Dam, Colossus by Michael Hiltzik.

I was a little concerned that the engineering descriptions would be over my head but this was not a problem at all.

The book has been rightly compared with David McCollough's accounts of the Panama Canal and Johnstown Flood.

Glad to hear this. I picked up the book but haven't gotten to it yet.

I've never been to the Dam but the book sounds interesting. I've added it to my wishlist.

I have never been there either -- had an opportunity once when I was younger but stupidly let it pass-- but the book has motivated me to get there.

It's definitely worth the trip to see the dam and the awesome bridge that now spans the gorge below the dam. Take the tour so you can go inside the dam and get a view from the bottom looking up. Very cool. Great book.
