Hesse's library is at the Swiss Literature Archive in Bern (http://ead.nb.admin.ch/html/hessed.html 'Hermann Hesses Bibliothek (Autorenbibliothek) ist Buch für Buch katalogisiert worden. Die Karteikarten sind im Zettelkatalog im Hesse-Zimmer des SLA einsehbar. Die insgesamt ca. 12'000 Bücher stehen im Magazin im Bereich Autorenbibliotheken SLA. ')

I've so far not worked for a LT legacy library but I think that would be a worthy task. But it seems, that I/we would have to go to Bern and catalog from the cards. Would there be enough people prepared to do that? Or is just an unrealistic fantasy of mine? Any suggestions I might go about this project?

Hesse would be a wonderful project.

If you don't want to spend months in the Archive, the catalogue cards would have to be scanned in. Even then, most entries would need to entered manually (as German library data support is weak, especially for old books. LT does not have access to the German or Austrian authority records where most of the books were published.). Manual entry is rather slow and painful - even just correcting my Thomas Mann entries takes up a lot of time. We are talking about 12,000 records ...

So the first step would be to ask the archivists if the cards could be scanned in.
Good luck, I am currently still wrestling with Mann, then Prince Eugene is in the pipeline. After that I might join you. Perhaps, you might start with a smaller project (e.g. Niklaus Meienberg in the same archive)?

Unless I'm misreading something, the above link (https://ead.nb.admin.ch/html/hessed.html) now enumerates all items in the collection. How would I go about migrating this table to a legacy library?

It looks like section D-4 on that site is at least an inventory of Hesse's library, yes! However, the formatting they've used isn't likely to be easily importable into LT, so it would be quite a big project to LL-ify it. If someone or a group really wanted to work on it we could try to get permission from the library to do so, but I think what I'd recommend instead is that we just log this library as one of those that is "Cataloged Elsewhere" and link to it where it is, rather than actually moving it into LT. Thoughts?

That sounds good to me. I only wish the page had a proper permalink. But how do I go about doing this, not having made a legacy library before?

I've set up a legacy profile at https://www.librarything.com/legacylibraries/profile/2008 noting that it's cataloged elsewhere and giving the link and the specific section folks should refer to!

Great. Thanks!
