I'm reading this anthology and there's a story by B.M. Bower in it. I had not read any of her work before, but it reminds me of Will James' stories. Has anyone else read her? Also, do folks here like Will James? I do. His work reads authentic to me.

Have read some B. M. Bower pieces, I think mostly anthologized, and it has been a while. I do remember liking them. I've been meaning to get to her Flying U Ranch series. Her papers are at the University of Oklahoma. http://oldlibrary.ou.edu/etc/westhist/bower/
Will James also an interesting writer and illustrator, and would be notable if for no reason other than his life which is quite a story in and of itself. James won a Newberry Medal for Smoky, The Cowhorse in 1927. http://www.unr.edu/news/templates/details.aspx?articleid=4938&zoneid=13

Thank you for the links, particularly to Bower's papers. One of the Charles Russell illustrations on the web site perhaps had her as its model. I didn't know Will James' history. Last night I was reading in one of his books about a young rustler who was shot and then helped by an elderly couple - probably some of it drawn from James' own experience. Really interesting to place these authors in a historical context, and it adds so much more to the reading of his works. Both he and Bower were pretty prolific - lots of good reading to come! Thank you again.

I enjoyed this anthology of short stories. I realized that after I finished it, I wanted to reread several of the stories, plus more works by some of the authors. I've read Silko quite a bit and enjoy her work. I've not read Yellow Woman (book), but I have it and will read it soon.

I've read some of BM Bower's work, having begun - as most people do - with 'Chip of the Flying U'.
Rather Enjoyable.
So, yes, gently recommended.

Thank you for the recommendation. I hope to find her work this weekend, somewhere in used form.
